Man missing in lower Kern

A 32-year-old man from the Oakland area apparently drowned in the lower Kern River near Remington Hot Springs Sunday afternoon. The man had reportedly been drinking and was said to have taken his clothes off and jumped in the river.

Search and Rescue teams launched rafts Sunday and the Sheriff's helicopter searched for him Sunday and Monday, but authorities said the river is very high and dangerous even for the most experienced swimmers and rafters.

Rescue officials discuss a plan of action after an unidentified Oakland man was apparently swept away in the lower Kern Sunday afternoon, while a companion waits for word.

“The river is extremely treacherous all of the way down, class 4 and 5 rapids,” said Bob Fisher, captain of the Kern Valley Search and Rescue unit. Fisher is recommending the public stay out of the lower river this spring and summer, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is releasing extra water into the lower river to bring the level of Isabella Lake down to 60 percent of full capacity so they may examine the dam structure.

The Kern County Sheriff's Department had not yet released the name of the man at press time.
