Gene Parks, owner of Gene Parks Farmers Insurance of Mountain Mesa, recently received an award of recognition for the agency's position as sixth in the nation for service to policy holders for Foremost Insurance, a division of Farmers.

In addition to the recognition plaque, the team received a deep water fishing trip in Lake Michigan off of Grand Rapids and an opportunity to tour all of the facilities at the Foremost Headquarters and meet the people they talk to regularly on the phone.

Parks has been with Farmers Insurance since he was released from the Army in 1974. A Vietnam veteran, Parks was awarded two bronze stars and two commendations medals for Meritorious of Service after his tour of duty. Parks volunteered for duty, and remained in the Army for three years.

“I was different then,” said Parks.

After his stint in the Army, Parks chose to go into the insurance business.

“It gives you an opportunity to do things that can benefit people if it's done properly.”

In 1972, a year after joining the Army, Parks married the love of his life, Mary Ann, and is still married 34 years later. They have two children, ages 30 and 32, and four grandchildren ranging in ages from one month to eight years.

Parks moved to the Kern River Valley from Steamboat Springs, Colo., in 1984 in search of a warmer climate. A colleague of his had recommended the Kern Valley, and Parks came here to look into it.

The beauty of the valley had him in love at first sight, and shortly after his family made the move. Parks said that what he likes most about the Kern Valley, besides the natural beauty that surrounds us, is, “the diversity of the population; all the different age groups, different backgrounds, and the relaxed atmosphere of the people here.”

Still running his Farmers Insurance office in Mountain Mesa, Parks thrives on getting to know his customers and the familial atmosphere at his office.

“My staff make it a pleasure to work in the office and in the valley, and that makes it fun to live and work here,” he said.
