From science to sports to history to conserving the rain forest, Wallace never stops with excitement.

The first Fast Food Friday took place last week at Wallace Middle School. It was a great success with Burger King sponsoring the event. The students had a choice of Spicy Chicken Sandwich, a Whopper Jr. with fries, or the regular cafeteria menu. The day was a great success and seconds were handed out after every one was served.

Woodrow Wallace Middle School students from Mrs. Bogart’s science class participate in a lab on sublimation and deposition.

The 7th grade history classes are also busy createing fiction travel brochures. They had to create brochures for advertising a trip to Mecca. While doing this project, students learned about past and present day Mecca. The students involved in the project had to describe the history, travel arrangements, religion, and other important information for traveling. Some students even did a brochure on what it would be like to travel to Mecca in the ancient times of Mohammed. The project really brought out the creativity in the students.

Seventh grade history teacher, Mrs. Brdar, said’ 'It turned out to be a terrific project. I will continue this project next year, because it was such a great learning experience for the students. I am very proud of them for their accomplishments.'

One of the students who worked on the project, Dominique Navarre, said, 'During this project, I realized that Mecca is more modern than I thought. We had five weeks to finish this project. It was very fun, because I got to learn more about Mecca. It was a challenge, but I was proud that I accomplished it.' Another student, Cicily Sadler, said, 'I enjoyed learning about how people live in Mecca. The project was hard, but I am proud of my work. I felt good after doing the travel brochure, because it would bring up my grade.'

During Red Ribbon Week Wallace Middle School, hosted several fun games. The students were divided into different teams for Red Ribbon Week activities. One of these events was a canned food drive. The teams at Wallace competed to get the most cans. The cans were then donated to the needy here in the valley. The winning teams were 8th grade purple, 7th grade gold, and 6th grade purple. These teams got ice cream as a reward for bringing in the most cans.

The 8th grade science class is always exiting. The float your boat contest was a great experience, and the boats (constructed from plastic bottles) that students didn’t want are being torn up and the bottles were recycled and the money given to Mrs. Woodward’s class to adopt an acre of rain forest in Costa Rica.

Also happening inside the classroom, 8th grade science teacher, Allison Bogart, has students hard at work on many fun and interesting science labs. This week the students were able to witness sublimation and deposition. They had to do some strange things for this lab, like put a beaker on top of another beaker. The moth balls which really are paradichclorobenzene were creating small hairs on the bottom of the beaker that was on top. Next trimester the class will be learning chemistry.

Peer mediation is now spreading the word about their process and new mediators are being trained for the coming year. They are hoping to impact the students on campus in a positive way. At this time the peer mediation team is working to educate students on the process of mediation.

To help get students to behave and be good role models, Woodrow Wallace Middle School has developed a new reward project. This project is called Caught You Being Good. When students are seen being good, they get a slip that they enter in a drawing. The students who win get a special prize from the activities director, Mr. Pair. So far this project is going very well.

Basketball tryouts are well underway. The 7th grade boys’ team has already been picked. The other teams are still looking to make their final cuts. Many good players have tried out; the teams are coming along very well. We are looking forward to having a great basketball season.
