Rain in the forecast and a chilly morning did not stop crowds from attending the 10th annual Heart Walk fund raiser, sponsored by the Kern Valley Hospital Foundation. Walkers, ranging in age from three to 92, gathered in front of Kern Valley High School for a morning of exercise for a good cause.

Teams consisted of four walkers, with a manager to keep track of the number of laps completed, with 20 percent of money raised by the teams going to charity.

Hundreds of residents showed up for the annual Heart Walk held Feb. 23.

The morning began with a short series of speeches by Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood, Kern Valley Hospital CEO Rick Carter, KUSD Superintendent Mary Barlow, Whiskey Flat Mayor Outlaw Jerry James, Deputy Whiskey Flat Mayor Vintage Val, and organizer of the event, Jeanette Rogers.

Sierra Gateway's Mark Preston, along with sons Neil and Cody, accepted multiple commemorative awards from Congressman Kevin McCarthy and Assemblywoman Jean Fuller in honor of the late Betty James.

Heart Walkers were treated to an appetizing lunch in the Wallace cafeteria, as well as raffles and prizes. Top teams and individuals were awarded with trophies and medals.

Jim Phillips and Mary Wagner completed the most laps, with 56 each. CJ's Hair Salon won the award for best theme. The judges’ overall choice went to WINGS. The Family Life Center received recognition for having the most teams in the event with 11, and a special award was given to Kim Booher for her continued support through the year of the Heart Walk.

The South Fork Woman’s Club received a special award for raising the most money for charity. The SFWC has the second-oldest walker Rachael Rowlette, 89, who walked along with K9 companion Lady. The reward for oldest walker went to CJ's Squeaky, age 92.

Jeanette Rogers and the rest of the Kern Valley Hospital Foundation wish to thank residents who continue to stand behind the annual Heart Walk. 'So many people come out that do not get trophies, yet they still continue to support the Heart Walk,' said Rogers. 'We wish to thank them as well as all of the wonderful business, individuals and organizations who made there way out here despite the cold and threat of rain.'
