On March 25, five ASB students from Kern Valley High School participated in a day long leadership conference offered by California Association of Student Councils (CASC). The students were: Ryan Barlow, Cristina Davis, Emily Kirkpatrick, Katie Powers, and Chris Woodward. The focus of the conference was to develop the skills necessary to initiate change in our schools. Over the course of the day, the students were split into two groups to discuss issues facing our school system today. The two main issues the groups decided to analyze were 'Student Voice' and 'Public Appearance'. They found the best solutions were (1) to include a student member on the Kern High School Board of Trustees and (2) to increase media coverage of the positive aspects of our schools. By creating a student board member students would be able to inform the board of current issues only seen from a student perspective. To increase a more positive, and accurate, perception of our schools by the public, the students decided to seek better media coverage. The students received certificates for their contributions.
