Officers from the Bakersfield Police Department's K-9 unit brought their uniquely trained police dogs to Wallace Elementary School to give a demonstration of the dogs' crime fighting skills. The officers explained to the students that the dogs are trained to find drugs by the trainers drilling holes in PVC pipe, corking both ends then playing catch. When the dogs are searching for people, they are really playing hide and seek. While searching for drugs, they are really looking for their favorite toy. Wolf, a german shepherd, was born in Hungary and trained in the Czech Republic. Officer South, who works with Wolf had to learn to give the dog's commands in the dog's 'native' language. Nicki, a bloodhound, is the only dog in Kern County that has been trained to locate missing people. 'We use these dogs for their noses. We use them to find bad drugs and bad guys. Dogs smell 1,000 times better than humans,' explained Officer South.

Officer Nicole, of the Bakersfield Police Department, demonstrates the crime fighting capabilities of Wolf, a german shepherd police dog at a presentation at Wallace Elementary School last Friday.
