The 10th annual Whiskey Flat Trail Run on Sunday was an enormous success. Eighty-eight hearty runners navigated the ups and downs of the misleadingly named Whiskey 'Flat' Trail. Adult competitors faced off in 5K and 10K races, while the younger crowd participated in a 1K Kids Run. The course, according to some of the runners, is the best in the area but all consider it a grueling test of their off road trail running skills.
The race has been a labor of love for Mike Lane and Darby Vreven who have been involved in organizing the event for the last several years. It led the enterprising duo and other local organizers to create a charitable organization which raises money for athletic equipment, travel and training of underserved youths in the Kern River Valley. Run-4-A-Way has been successfully aiding disadvantaged child athletes, as well as helping to rebuild damaged athletic equipment, for the last three years with funds primarily raised through the annual trail race.

The organizers and Run-4-A-Way are grateful for the generosity of the event’s many local sponsors and for all of the volunteers who graciously gave their time. They would also like to give special thanks to John Doersam who very generously allowed the race to be staged in front of his home.
Run-4-A-Way’s next event will be the Dam Tough River Trail Run on November 8th which will utilize the full fifteen miles of the Whiskey Flat Trail.
