Firefighters contain blaze near Kern Valley Plaza

A fast moving fire broke out about 5:30 p.m. Friday on the frontage property on Lake Isabella Blvd, between Kern Valley Plaza and AltaOne Bank. Kern County Fire Department and the Forest Service each brought in a helicopter for water drops, while the agencies’ firefighters battled the flames on the ground and fought to keep the blaze under control until it was contained about 6:30 p.m. No structures were destroyed and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Woman attacked by bear in Caliente

PIUTE-CA, at approximately 10 a.m. , on Tuesday July 22, a local resident out walking her 2 dogs was attacked by a bear. Unfortunately one of the dogs was killed; the other was able to escape. The woman received severe lacerations to her head and face in the attack. However, she was able to walk back to her car and drive 3 to 4 miles to the local Kern county Fire Station, Station 78 in Piute.

SUSPICION OF DUI: On 08-04-2008, at approximately 10:20 p.m., Gerald Lynn Meyers, 59 of Bakersfield, was discovered standing next to his motorcycle on Hwy. 155 at Old State Road. The motorcycle was lying on its side on the dirt shoulder. The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Myers for DUI.

On July 23, Russel B. Green, 52, of Weldon, was traveling northbound on Sierra Way north of Stine Cove on his 1999 Harley-Davidson motorcycle, when he lost control of his vehicle. He sustained major injuries and was flown by medi-vac to Kern Medical Center. Investigation led to Green’s arrest on suspicion of DUI. (see photo)
