Two teenage boys escaped from Camp Owen near Kernville Monday morning. The pair, a 14-year-old and a 15-year-old, had been at the detention center for just two days when they were observed leaving the facility, said Assistant Director Thad Kennedy. “Law enforcement immediately responded,” he said. Kern County Sheriff's Deputies searched areas along the banks of the lower Kern River while a K-9 unit and a KCSO helicopter were dispatched to aid in the search. The pair had traveled about 18 miles from the minimum security camp when they were spotted near the Kern River just north of the Black Gulch South raft launch area. The young men were apprehended about 1:00 p.m. and taken into custody.

Two escapees from Camp Owen near Kernville were apprehended by Kern County Sheriff's Deputies near the Borel bridge on Hwy 178 Monday afternoon and taken into custody.
