Kern Valley AYSO U-19 girl’s team Nike (Goddess of Victory) sponsored by Bob’s Marine and Small Engine Repair played host to Liberty Park Random Blue.

The game was a violent battle from the start. Nike began the match with an offensive push, as Brittany Baker made a run down the side line.

Taking a shot from just outside the penalty box, Baker delivered the ball directly to the keeper, who couldn’t get a grasp on the kick, letting it slide into the net.

Unfortunately minutes later the opposition ran the ball down the field, beating the defense to even the score 1-1.  Fighting hard after the resulting kick off, Random Blue repeated their previous feat, with ball once more reaching the back off the goal.

Kern Valley, didn’t dwell on the two points, but instead took the trailing score as reason to pull together and battle back. Their adversaries worked hard in order to achieve a point blank shot which was shot down with ease by Nike’s keeper Vivian Whelan. Whelan proceeded to clear the ball into the middle region of the field.

Jaimie Olle, eyeing the pass, let the ball travel overhead before connecting with it and making a drive up the field.

As the keeper came out, she took a shot, evening the score out 2-2.

As play resumed, a hand ball was called in the penalty box. Random Blue received a penalty kick, but the shot went wide, not presenting any immediate danger. Seconds later the opposition crossed the ball in front of Nike’s net, with one of their players getting a head on the ball and resulting in a score of 2-3.

The opponents continuously pressed hard, beating in another goal, minutes later.

As Blue, returned to Nike’s defensive half, the ball was cleared out the end line, allowing Random Blue a corner kick. The cross came in three yards out, permitting a rival to get a foot on the ball before delivering it into the goal.

Nike coming back fierce, worked to even the score. Sarah Bedard stole the ball from a challenger before delivering it down the left wing to Valerie Cormack, who proceeded to smash the ball into the back of the opposition’s net.

Minutes later Olle passed a ball into the box for V. Cormack who came onto it hard, driving it once more across the goal line. This left the halftime score at 4-5 with Nike down.

The second half got under way with Random Blue awarded a penalty kick. Whelan stopped initial kick but was unable to deflect the follow-up. As the game continued, Nike received two corner kicks, both taken by Baker, were deflected.

The half was hard fought with numerous penalties, including a red card for one of Random Blue’s players. Random Blue managed two more scores, leaving the final score at 4-8.
