Broncs balanced attack beats Pomona

The Broncs using a balanced offense was able to pick up their first win of the season over Pomona.

Kern Valley opened quickly as they scored the first 14 points to go up 14-0, but two big touchdown plays allowed the Red Devils to tie the score at 14-14 going into the half.

A monster punt return for a touchdown broke the tie and the Broncs defense stuffed the Red Devils the rest of the way.

Kern Valley had two scoring opportunities missed in the game as two field goal attempts were missed.

Kern Valley began the scoring after forcing Pomona to punt. Taking over on the Pomona 44-yard line, the Broncs went 44 yards in seven plays.

Kyler Emery threw his second scoring toss of the season as he hooked up with Ronnie Grannan for 30 yards and the score. Logan Campbell added the PAT and the Broncs had their first lead of the year.

Ethan Kennedy picked off a Red Devils pass, but another scoring chance went by the wayside as the second field goal attempt was missed.

The game stayed that way through the rest of the first quarter.

The Broncs took possession near the end of the quarter and went 30 yards into the end zone in four plays capped off by Mark Eisenhauer’s nine yard scamper. Campbell kicked the extra-point and the Broncs were ahead 14-0.

The Kern Valley defense suffered a let down as the Red Devils scored 14 unanswered points in the second.

A 72-yard pass and catch resulted in the first score for the Red Devils. With Kern Valley driving an interception by Pomona of a Emery pass gave the Red Devils the opportunity to score.

The first play after the pick went for 60 yards and the tying touchdown and the game was knotted at 14-14 at the break.

Coming out for the second half, the Broncs defense stiffened and forced the punt.

Kennedy gathered the punt at his own 17-yard line and zig zagged his way down the field and into the end zone for the 83-yard punt return romp. Campbell kicked the PAT and the Broncs were up 21-14. Kern Valley added a touchdown on a 14-yard run from Eisenhauer.

Eisenhauer led Kern Valley in rushing with 84 yards on 16 carries.

Tyler Gibson picked up 45 yards on 13 rushes, while Emery gained 43 yards on five carries. Kevin Rendon rushed twice for 17 yards, while Kennedy carried the ball once for three yards.

Matt Henderson rounded out the rushing totals with one carry for two yards.

Emery threw the ball 14 times and completed seven for 123 yards. Grannan had two catches for 40 yards, while Warren Pappas hauled in two for 25 yards. Kennedy caught one pass for 27 yards, while David Heitman had one for 20 yards.

Defensively, the Broncs were led by Rendon with 12 tackles, including half a sack. Heitman had 11 tackles, while Mark Driskell finished with six tackles and picked off a Red Devils pass. Pappas had five tackles and a fumble recovery, while Bo Hurley had five, including a total of two sacks. Danny Gudino had four tackles, including a half of a sack. Kennedy had four tackles and an interception, while Glenn Sailors and Gibson each had four tackles.
