JV girls take third at Shafter Tournament

On Sept. 20 the morning began early for the Lady Broncs, they left the high school in Lake Isabella at 6 a.m. to compete at the Shafter Volleyball Tournament, which included 13 teams.

The Lady Broncs played a total of six games winning five; Kern Valley won Shafter, 15-1 and 15-3, Tehachapi, 15-6 and 16-14, Wasco, 16-14 and 15-7, West High, 15-9 and 15-6 and Independence, 15-6 and 15-8, and then Kern Valley lost to Garces 15-9 and 15-17.

The top first and second place teams from each pool would then go onto play each other to determine the first, second and third place teams of the tournament.

Kern Valley played the best of three against Frontier, with the Lady Broncs winning two of the three; the first game Frontier took the win 12-15, then Kern Valley won the second game 15-11, as well as the third game with the score of 15-12.

Although the Lady Broncs lost to the Frontier Lady Titans, Coach Adam Vittoria said the girls looked great doing it.

“The loss to Frontier was the one and only loss for the rest of the day,” said Vittoria.

After winning five straight games in their pool and taking second place, the Lady Broncs went onto play a very tough team the lady Titans, for the third place overall in the tournament.

Lady Broncs Jamie Duran, Morgan Eirich, Abbey Stanton and Breanna Register were seen on the court as outstanding players. “These girls were great, they focused played their hardest and came together as a unit and a team,” Vittoria said.

Vittoria mentioned that this experience is definatly one of the best highlights so far in his coaching career at Kern Valley and he expects great things from this young frosh/soph squad. “I really appreciate the parent support, there were a lot of parents at this tournament, thank you,” said Vittoria.

The stats are a combination of all seven games; Register served 46 times, she had 12 aces, 15 kills, five digs, Duran served 28 times and had six aces, 12 kills, two digs, and a whopping 92 assists, Eirich served 42 times, with nine aces, one dig, 27 assist, and Stanton served 11 times, had three aces, and five kills.

Sydney Scott served six times, and had two aces, Deborah Riley served one, had 14 kills, one block, Allyson Borthick served twice, had seven assists, and one kill, Stephanie Lopez served seven times, one ace, nine kills, and three digs, Sierra Ure served eight, had 16 kills, one block, one dig, and one assist.

Katy Emery served 11, with four aces, six kills, and one dig, Kayla Evans served seven, with one ace, 24 kills, two digs, and Jessie Looy served three times, had one kill, and one dig.
