Kern Valley slips by Broncos 21-14

The junior varsity Broncs continued their roll through the High Desert League as they defeated Bishop on Friday 21-14.

Both teams played evenly in the first half as the half time score was knotted at 14-14.

Kern Valley (8-0, 2-0 HDL) got on the board in the third quarter and then made it stand up.

Tied at 14-14 the Broncs took their second possession of the third quarter and marched it down the field for the eventual game-winner.

After pinning Bishop deep in their own territory and forcing them to punt, the Broncs set up at the Broncos 33-yard line.

It took 10 plays for the Broncs to find the end zone. Robbie Fisher capped the drive with a one yard plunge and the go-ahead score. Dylen Atkinson added the extra-point and the lead was the Broncs.

They would battle back and forth the rest of the way. Bishop near the end of the game had a chance to possibly tie the game, but a special teams mistake cost them the opportunity.

After forcing Kern Valley to punt, the ball was coming to a stop when a Bishop player for unknown reasons touched the ball. This resulted in the Broncs recovering a fumble as the touch made it a live ball.

Kern Valley ran out the clock and the game and the top spot in the HDL stayed in their grasp.

Bishop scored first in the game as they took the opening kick off and went 77 yards in 11 plays.

The Broncs answered early in the second quarter as Aaron LaFarga scored from one yard out. Atkinson added the PAT and the game was tied at 7-7.

Bishop regained the lead after recovering a Kern Valley fumble.

The first play from scrimmage and 33 yards later it was 14-7 in favor of Bishop. The Broncs tied it on their next possession as Fisher threw to Anthony Hernandez from 31 yards out to close to within one. Atkinson tied it up with his foot as the PAT was good.

Kern Valley had a total of 274 yards in the game with 228 coming on the ground and 46 through the air.

Bishop had 207 total yards with 116 passing and 91 rushing.

Dakota Claude’ was the leading rusher for Kern Valley with 150 yards on 25 carries. LaFarga picked up 41 yards on eight carries, while Cody Bulgarelli gained 25 yards on eight rushes. Travis Gibson rushed twice for 11 yards and Fisher carried three times for one yard.

Fisher was 2-of-4 passing for the 46 yards. Hernandez had the scoring catch of 31 yards and Bulgarelli had one catch for 15 yards.

LaFarga recovered a fumble, while Bulgarelli picked off a Bishop pass.
