Three local firefighters were honored at the Kern Valley Exchange Club’s 2nd Annual Firefighter of the Year Award Dinner at Paradise Cove Nov. 17. Kern County Fire Captain Mike Heffner of Station 71 in Southlake; Ron Bollier, U.S. Forest Service Fulton Hot Shots Superintendent; and Captain Burns Brimhall of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management were the 2008 recipients of Kern River Valley Firefighter of the Year Award. The complete story will appear in next week’s print issue of the Sun and online at www.kvsun.com.

With fires raging in Southern California, approximately 80 firefighters from Kern County were battling the Tea fire in Santa Barbara and the Freeway Complex fire in Orange County.

U.S. Bureau of Land Management Captain Burns Brimhall, left, displays his Firefighter of the Year Award presented by the Bureau’s Field Office Manager, Tim Smith, center, and Exchange Club President Dave Freeland at Paradise Cove Nov. 17
