On Nov. 21, the first 40 Wallace Middle School students to reach their goal for reading points in the Accelerated Reader Program, got to go on a field trip to the Bakersfield Museum of Art as a reward for their achievement. Students went on a guided tour of the entire museum as the docents explained about the major pieces in each gallery. They saw works from several local residents of the Kern River Valley expressing how they feel about the county.

Many of the students enjoyed Dorothy Churchill-Johnson’s pieces due to the natural beauty and detail. The students had a great time experiencing the modern and ancient paintings as well as the sculptures. Trinity Snyder said, “My favorite part was when we walked through the different rooms and got to experience the different paintings and art work.”

At the end of their guided trip, students got to learn how to make different forms of art and got to make some themselves. “As an artist myself,” said Ali Bounds, “I would have liked it more if we had more time to free draw and express our own emotions.” Students had a blast at this rewarding trip to the Bakersfield Museum of Art.

" Somehow "Bakersfield" "Museum" and "Art" seem to be strange bedfellows in a single sentence. I guess I'll have to go and see what qualifies as "art" in Bakersfield besides pickups. "
