Sacramento – The California Department of Motor Vehicles would like to inform and remind drivers all over the state that in less than a month, they will no longer be able to legally text message while behind the wheel. On January 1, 2009, a new state law will go into effect; a law aimed to prevent text-messaging while driving and the collisions which could occur as a result.
SB28 prohibits a person using an electronic wireless communications device to write, send or read text-based messages while operating a motor vehicle. This law specifically addresses, but is not limited to, instant messages and all forms of e-mail based correspondence.
