Kern Valley Sun
On Feb. 18, Kern Valley Healthcare District CEO Rick Carter issued the following statement.
“The Kern Valley Healthcare District has fully cooperated with the investigation by the Department of Justice. The District will not tolerate any behavior by employees that jeopardize the safety of our patients.

“The charges filed (Feb. 18) against current and former employees of the District involve alleged activities by these individuals at the District’s skilled nursing facility in late-2006 and ending in January 2007. Corrective actions and other improvements were implemented following a Department of Public Health inspection in January 2007. Since that time, several subsequent inspections have found no significant problems.
“The District will take whatever action is necessary and appropriate in light of the complaint. The District is committed to providing the best possible care for our residents. Since this is an active prosecution, the District will not be making any further comments at this time. The Kern Valley Healthcare District skilled nursing facility is an important healthcare resource to the Kern Valley community. The District is committed to managing this facility to provide the very best care and a quality living environment for elderly and temporarily disabled residents.”
Regaining the public’s trust may take some time. “I was so surprised (to hear of the arrests),” said Southlake resident Anna Vaught. “I’m ready to move out of the valley. It scares me. I don’t have any family here. The first thing I’ll do if I get sick, my family will take me out of here. It’s so sad.”
Peg Greenberg, an active member of the Hospital Auxiliary, voiced her confidence in the district. “As tragic as these events are, people need to remember that this is a result of circumstances that happened three years ago and our hospital and SNF have been under a State microscope since and has passed all examinations. Our SNF is being administered by professionals and these types of events are not a concern now or in the immediate future.”

Simply telling your supervisor does not fulfill this requirement. Furthermore, federal law also protects the reporting employee against retaliation from the employer. "
