Budget cuts at Kern Valley High School

Published on Tuesday, April 14, 2009 10:21 PM PDT

When school programs have to be eliminated to meet a reduced budget it is always controversial which one comes under the ax. If I was the person who had to make that decision an incident that occurred to me this week at one of the valley stores would influence my choice. I required 20 foot of re-bar cut into five pieces each four foot long. I told the young lady, obviously a recent school leaver, my requirements. She informed me that there would be a 35-cent charge for each cut. When I looked at my receipt I noticed she had charged me for five cuts. I attempted to put her right but finally accepted the charge as I was not getting through to her.

Obviously four years of high school mathematics is not working so why continue with it?

" Please don’t let your recent encounter with one recent school leaver leave you with a negative view of all recent school leavers. I recently left school with many other school leavers whose brains would put the school leaver that you had your recent encounter with to shame. Recently leaving school was the proudest achievement of my life (thus far), and the same holds true for many other leavers that I left with. Do the math. That’s many other leavers. You met one. "

" Would that be the same batch of supportive parents that want us to continue funding HeadStart to do their jobs for them? No wonder matters don't improve as we go through the educational process!

Seems to me, any way you slice it, there's a number of parents who got into the job without a true commitment of what the concept means, and are now wanting the rest of the world to do the work! "

" Maybe in other countries the students are expected to behave themselves and the teachers have the support of parents. You couldn't pay me enough to be a teacher in this country. People in Europe are aghast that we actually have to have police officers in our schools - it's apparently unheard of there. "

" For Bob Walker: Yes, the kids in Europe all know languages when they graduate, it is a requirement. Makes me wonder why and how those teachers who make about one-third what a teacher in the USA makes as salary, one wonders why they would, could it be they care about the kids and not just the job? " I hate to rain on your parade but studies show that kids who are held back in school, find it harder to achieve later in life. That is why there is such a push to get these kids up to level with thier class mates. The United States doesn't put enough emphasis on early education, kids learn the most and have largest capacity for learning during the first few years of life. This is a great time to develop skill but Americans set thier kids in front of the TV, while they live thier busy lives. TVs have become babysitters! "

" I had the same expereince at a fast food restaurant. I gave the cashier a 5 and 27 cents for a bill of 3.27 and it confused her so horribly that I took the change back. When I was in school, fail meant fail and you were held back. What happened to earning your way up the ladder? And these people are supposed to be the future of this country? They can't do math or speak proper english now! Ask one who the prez was during WW!!! "

" Thanks for such a clear reason why our school have already failed. The kids in Europe all graduate with three to four languages and doing college math.
Our KRV kids are going to get six million or so of new buildings thanks to Ms. Barlow, but no more education.
Most of the teachers hate having the kids tested. Isn't having to figure out how many times to charge you 35 cents for rebar cuts a test?
Let's demand our school system not pass on one kid who does pass the tests for their grade. "

" Whether the high school budget is cut or not, it will continue to be as it always has; a place where the clique obsessed play and those that want an education dig in and find it.

You'll never be able to stop someone who truly wants to learn. Just as you'll never be able to teach someone who just wants to get by. "
