Compassion evidenced

Published on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 10:20 PM PDT

On Saturday, April 18, just like the third Saturday of every month, a group with their pickups drove around the area collecting food distributed to The Food Pantry, God’s Storehouse, and The Salvation Army. At the Wofford Heights stop, a Family Life Center (Wofford Heights) van pulled up with food donated  by the compassionate folks at the Family Life Center – lots of food (a red collection barrel plus a number of boxes) – thanks to Brian Polston and the compassionate members of the Family Life Center for all that food! Perhaps other groups during the last four weeks have donated that much food or more to these organizations - I hope so – every month the need exceeds the donations. We appeal to ALL persons in this Valley who can to demonstrate compassion for fellow residents challenged to secure this basic element of survival – food. We could be like Scrooge in that infamous holiday movie and assume government agencies provide the necessary assistance, or we can take more personal responsibility for our neighbors and exhibit our compassion like the folks at the Family Life Center. As indicated previously, no matter what differences in belief, those of us in the Compassion Caravan are just offering a means of collecting and getting the food to the organizations – if your organization (club, school, business) wants to use our collection services, just contact us and we’ll supply a red collection barrel and pick-up any collected food or monetary donations – see the display ad in this paper, 4/18 – or see the red collection barrels at Vons,  Mt. Mesa Market , and Sierra Gateway Market (Southlake) to contact us.

" Sorry Wallace, I have written two comments to you but the Editor chooses not to post mine when she does not like what I write, whether it is confrontational like your comments are that get printed! That's the way the cookie crumbles when you have an Editor who is biased in favor of liberals (Al Steuart friends). "

" To “why not too”: Thank you for sharing my view. Please note that I was able to express it without slandering anyone. Also good luck in finding a charity or public service organization where no egos at all are involved. If you’re a churchgoer, you must be aware that egos run rampant there also. The Compassion Caravan has my continued support. Al irritates me, yes, but you make me ill. "

" To Wallace: you seem to have arrived at the same thought I have, when the "charity" becomes a vehicle to promote ones image, then the image is more important to the individual as in this case. This is also true in the case of other individual "docs" who attach themselves to numerous causes to magnify their images, in lieu of quiet, continued, long term caring is the true result of those whose "Golden Deeds" are indeed, humble and non-self seeking. "

" Hateful people will go out of their way to find reasons....albeit made up. You just have to ignore those things or else you just encourage them. The Caravan is a great service and anyone who doesn't like it (or its organizers) simply don't have to use it. Life is about choices...I choose to support them. "

opie wrote on May 18, 2009 8:42 PM:

" About the 501 C-3 thing, “why not too”: Is this another experiment or what? When you said the CC is cheating, was THAT an accusation, or just some new mindbender you’ve concocted? Anyway, I’ve got an answer to try out: The CC’s a caravan, not a charity. It only makes ‘deliveries’. Did I get it right? "

Question for why not too wrote on May 18, 2009 7:52 PM:

" Why would the Caravan for Compassion need to be a 501 C-3? Aren't they just transporting donations from Point A to Point B? "

wallace wrote on May 18, 2009 7:40 PM:

" Should the Caravan try another spokesperson? Al’s causes seem less important to him than the stir he creates among people he deems his inferiors. His “educated” views on Christianity are “borrowed” views; there are people all around here who have reached the same conclusions without any schooling at all. He’s linked his name to the Caravan in the same way he linked Easter to gay marriage; to whatever degree he can put the focus on Al, it will always be on Al. The man needs far too much attention... Al, who do you want to play you in the movie? "

opie wrote on May 18, 2009 6:53 PM:

" You got it, Mac: the post “implied” something. It was an experiment. On the good side, it helped establish that the CC people aren’t stealing food from the poor. But no one ever thought they were doing that anyway. I’d like to imply that “why not too” has gay sex on his mind, not stealing; but I’m just sick and tired of talking about Al’s sex life. "

Why not too wrote on May 18, 2009 6:03 PM:

" Can the Caravan of Compassion prove they are a 501 C-3 and make an accounting to the government? There is no registration of this charity nor the "Progressive Alliance for change"
in all the collective registrations for charity's in this valley nor for 501 C-3! That is what you blind people don't see....now you know...and what are you going to do about it? Just let it slip by because it is "one of yours cheating?" "

Mac wrote on May 18, 2009 4:43 PM:

" Actually, somebody DID accuse (or imply strongly) the Caravan of stealing:

Why not too wrote on May 6, 2009 5:33 AM:

" I am taking my charitable donations to the Salvation Army, The Pantry, and the God's Storehouse, these charitable organizations have collected donations for over 30 years and the ones who work there do not take any portion of the donations, can the Caravan of Compassion say the same? "

Then you go on to demand accountability in another comment. If those two statements aren't accusations of stealing, then what exactly are they? "

wallace wrote on May 18, 2009 11:03 AM:

" Mr. Steuart: The Compassion Caravan has my full support, and I commend you for your part in putting it together. But I’d like to suggest that you continue in your efforts without making them quite so much about ‘you’. In this area, for you to say “Is ‘accuracy in reading’ positively correlated with ‘level of education’? Anyone know?” to a blogger on this site shows something other than a compassionate heart. Maybe you’re a big fish in a small pond, but I have a hunch that in a bigger pond you’d sink out of sight pretty fast. "

to why not too wrote on May 18, 2009 10:36 AM:

" So your post of May 6 was an “experiment”? I don’t get it. You posed a question and it was answered. Now you’re posing another one, about “accountability;” sort of the same thing all over again, isn’t it? Haven’t you got any new ideas? Or are you just real attached to this one? "

Why not too wrote on May 17, 2009 4:42 PM:

" That was a very interesting experiment. No One accused Caravan of Compassion of stealing....but someone sure jumped on defending that thought....makes one wonder, huh? All I talked about was accountability...that also makes me wonder if there is any...... "

Mac wrote on May 16, 2009 7:44 AM:

" You want accountability? As public as this thing is, if the charities benefitting from the Caravan weren't receiving anything, don't you think they'd have said by now? Do you seriously think that the Caravan people are taking that food home and eating it? And exactly what evil are you suspecting from a swim program? You know, good works can come even from people that you violently disagree with and it only makes you a bigger person when you can set aside your differences and acknowledge that. "

BmbqM wrote on May 14, 2009 9:40 AM:

" Dawn, please don’t let that nasty accusation depress you. It was made to thwart your efforts, and it failed; no one really believes the Caravan is stealing anything. "

Dawn Jordan wrote on May 13, 2009 4:17 PM:

" Stealing! That nasty accusation just depresses me...
I'm part of the Caravan, and believe me, there are plenty of other things I could be doing with my Saturday than standing on street corners and emptying red barrels. And there are probably more efficient ways of getting help to those who need it.
But we do hope that our visibility will continue to create awareness, and that maybe if we make it a little easier, more people who want to give will be able to do so. That's all, no ulterior motives, I swear. "

Mac wrote on May 13, 2009 6:52 AM:

" It's great to see that the community is giving so much even in these hard economic times. And I'm sure the visibility of the compassion caravan is instrumental in that. "

Yes, representing Compassion Caravan I can state ALL food and ALL funds collected go to the three charities - if we are stealing, please notify the Sheriff. Yesterday I got a call from Von's regarding the container being almost full so I picked up 4 30 gallon bags of food from that container today to be combined with any food collected Sat., 5/16 - thanks to contributors! " Why not too(or Wise Counselor?) We get it. You don't like the barrels. So don't use them. They are convenient for others, as well as a reminder to donate. And as long as we're throwing around nasty implications about people's motives, maybe some people don't need to personally walk into the food bank so they can get validation and gratitude. Maybe an anonymous barrel suits them just fine.

I seriously do not believe you accused the Caravan people of thieving. Do you really think Dr. Spohn needs to scrounge people's castaway cans of food? "

celia wrote on May 7, 2009 4:13 PM:

" wow people get real! First none of the caravan people are taking any food for themselves so get off that paranoid trip. Second, the compassion caravan is just an option. By all means, take food directly to the pantry. But for those who like the convienence of putting food in the barrel at the store, that's okay too. But everyone just grow up and stop putting people down for doing their part to help. "

Why not too wrote on May 7, 2009 12:12 AM:

" Why is everyone so enthused about Al picking up the food stores and taking them there? I have done this myself for over 30 years of living here in the valley, and I find no reason to put my donations in a red barrel for someone else to do it for me; I am not a shut in; I am not afraid of other people, I do not need Caravan of Compassion to do that for me, nor do I want it! Why won't you people accept that as a given?
Why are you all so stubborn about it? "

Maybe the person who took the sign can take it back, huh? On the other matter of the red barrels, maybe you should call Holly Spohn Gross and ask her, I think she is the person who started the Caravan for Compassion with
Al Steuart and it was her phone number in the newspaper ads. "
