What’s religion got to do with feeding our hungry?

Published on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 10:20 PM PDT

I’m writing about a very disturbing rumor I heard recently; that some people in our valley are intentionally not contributing to the Caravan for Compassion and that they are encouraging others to follow this appalling policy! Their reasoning is that the project was started by a homosexual person and is run by “liberals,” homosexuals and those sympathetic to their plight and others who are presumed to have an “agenda” of some sort. How can that be? This project is about the collection of food to help the hungry people in our valley, perhaps one of your neighbors? What about you, ever been hungry? Do you think that a child who has to go to bed hungry cares that a homosexual person started the program?  Or that a Democrat took their time to spend a day driving around the lake to collect the food? Why do “we” insist on making everything about politics and/or religion? They are, have always been and will continue to be very hot and controversial topics and everyone is entitled to their opinion and their way of life, but what does that have to do with feeding our hungry? I don’t get it and I think that it’s an atrocity……you should be ashamed of yourselves.

" Hi, my name is Phyllis Brewer. I am from the food pantry. I would like to set the record straight. I DID NOT TELL ANYONE THAT WE HAD NO ROOM FOR MORE FOOD.. Before saying things that are not true, go to the source and find out the truth before passing on rumors.Thank you for the chance to defend myself. Yes we have lots of room for food. Please keep giving, we need it. There is lots of hungry people here in our valley. In fact it may be you, next week. "

" To "concerned" Al did not bash anyone. He simple expressed an opinion. It seems to me that many in these blogs bash"the homosexual lifestyle"(whatever that is) and the ultimate bashing was propH8. It's okay to express opinions. It's not okay to force your opinion into civil law.Just like it would be wrong for me to enter your church and vote about your practices, it was wrong for you to enter our marriages and vote on them.As for the "last days" speal, I've heard that talk since before I was concieved, so forgive me for not jumping on your wagon. " Thanks, Celia...I like your comments, too. Unfortunately you can't reason with an unreasonable person...from the comments of the Webmaster on several pages, it seems WC will now have to change his name to post. "

" A word to the wise (counselor): This forum is for facilitating public dialogue, express opinions, add something thoughtful to the conversation. Your most recent comment will not be posted because is not truthful. To claim, "...the owner at the Pantry told a member of a club I belong to there was not room for any more supplies at that time...." is absurd. When Phyllis Brewer of the Pantry heard this, her response: "Where did she hear that?!? We receive a yearly grant, but that always runs out too soon. We are always in need of donations!" "

" I love your letters Peg and it looks like you are trying to reason with "wise" counselor. You stated that you and "wise" DON'T know everything...I think "wise" counselor DOES know everything, just ask him/her/it.Oh you cant's he/she/it won't tell who they are.Too bad as they would get lot's of advertising...people would line up for someone practically claiming to be the omnipotent God Himself..... "

" It's okay, Wise..you do have a choice and no one is making you do anything you don't support or agree with. I admit I don't know everything as you don't, about "human nature" but my life experiences has taught me a great deal, and I certainly don't trust easily anymore, sadly. I have dealt with many "questionable" people and yes, if I find that their character is not to my liking, I don't deal with them. I'm glad that you donate directly to these organizations and hope that you continue to but other don't so, don't shoot a good messenger. "

" I am sorry Peg, nothing you say can make me put my donations to feed the hungry in those red barrels or load up pickups driver by people who I do not know; listen, there are some things you don't understand about human nature, if you don't understand, then you don't know what it means to not trust people whose character is questionable. End of story. "

" Wise, I DO understand! Yes these charitable organizations have been here for a very long time and they are SUFFERING because they don't have the donations they need to feed the hungry in our valley. So, Caravan made it easier for you, you don't have to drive around to buy and drop off your offerings, you can put them in a can inside of the market. Donations have increased since they started this..did you know that? These people don't do this for glory, they do it for humanity. This is, apparently, what YOU don't understand! "

" "wise" Oh I just KNEW you couldn't pass the test!!!!I DO have the right to love the adult that I do. BUT I should also have the SAME CIVIL rights as anyone else! Keep your religious laws where they belong, in the church you choose to go to.And yes, you can donate directly.Do you? Oh and there were many religious traditions around LONG before christianity and the bible. Really try the test, I dare you! The bible does say something about stoning false prophits...no wonder you won't say your name....Remember God know what we do in secret.....worried? "

Wise Counselor wrote on Apr 22, 2009 2:36 PM:

" Celia: Again, I say you have the right to be a homosexual, no one takes that right away from you. We also have the right to make our charitable donations directly to the charity. That eliminates the "middle man" that has been created by the "Caravan of Compassion;" i.e. it was all established before you all got here, just like Christianity and the Bible! "

celia wrote on Apr 22, 2009 10:07 AM:

" Okay. To the uptight "christians"(not the real ones)here's a test. Go to the store and buy some bread. Go to the river and catch some fish. Take the loaves and fish to the food pantry and multiply them several fold and feed everyone in the valley. If you can do that, you have the right to judge others. Can't do that? Stop judging, grow up and DO something to help. And for everyone's sake, GET ALONG! "

Wise Counselor wrote on Apr 22, 2009 7:39 AM:

" Peg: What you and Al Steuart and Holly Gross do not understand, is that we who donate to these three charitys have done so for years, long before the "Caravan of Compassion" came into being. We enjoy the personal touch of taking our charitable offering to the charitys ourselves, why can't you see that? These three charitys, Salvation Army, God's Storehouse, and the Pantry were established way back in the 1980's! They have the 501 C-3's to cover the donations and we like to do that without having you people as "middle men." Why can't you see/hear this? "

" I agree very strongly. And what's more, I think Jesus would admonish those people as well. I think people forget who Jesus chose to hang out with and which types he chose to shun. I think the modern day Christians can compare themselves with the Pharisees of old and if Jesus were to come back today I doubt any of them would recognize or welcome him. "
