Baucus bill proposes USFS fee rollback

Senator Max Baucus (D-MT) introduced legislation that would block the U.S. Forest Service and other federal agencies from charging higher fees to access their public lands. S.868 The Fee Repeal and Expanded Access Act of 2009 was offered up on April 27, with Sen. Mike Crapo of Idaho as lead cosponsor. The bill would revoke authority given to the Forest Service in 2004 to institute new fees and increase existing fees at campgrounds, trailheads, and other public areas.

Kern Valley Search and Rescue Captain Brian Baskin receives a $750 dollar donation from Debbie Freeland of West America Bank. West America Bank donates money annually to help with any needs the Kern Valley Search and Rescue may have. Baskin said the donation will be used to complete work on a new rescue truck.

Fuller to host meetings in KRV Friday

Doctors honor inspiring mentors

Drs. Robert Gross and Holly Spohn-Gross, of Kernville, know their successes were not built on their efforts alone. They felt it’s important to remember the people on whose shoulders they stand. So on April 27 the couple held a dedication ceremony at the Sienna Wellness Institute in Mt. Mesa for two people who, according to the pair, were extremely influential figures in their lives. The late Miriam Wilson, who started the Century 21 Real Estate office locally in 1977, which later grew to three offices and dozens of agents. She sold the business and retired in 1997.

Sheriff’s senior volunteer hurt badly by patrol car

An 81-year-old senior volunteer with the Kern County Sheriff’s Department was badly injured Wednesday, April 22, when their patrol car accidentally rolled over her, the California Highway Patrol reported.

KCSO assists Tulare County with rescue

On Saturday at approximately 6:30 p.m. hours, the Kern County Sheriff's Air Support Unit was requested by the Tulare County Sheriff's Department to assist in a rescue of a kayaker with a possible broken back. The kayaker was in a remote area of the North Fork Kern River, approximately four miles north east of Johnsondale, known as the "Tea Cups," popular to kayakers and white water rafting. Sheriff's rescue helicopter Air-5 responded and after brief search of the surrounding cliff’s and steep mountainous canyons, located the victim and several family members on the mountainside above the Kern River. Sheriff's Air-5 crew members were hoisted down to the patient, immobilized him, and hoisted him to safety. The victim, Craig Stonner, 59, of Boise, Idaho was flown to an awaiting Medivac helicopter from Kern County. Three of the victim’s family members were hoisted from the mountainside and transported to awaiting Tulare County deputies. The injured kayaker was transported by air ambulance to Kern Medical Center. Stonner was later transported to San Jouaquin where he is listed in stable condition.

Onyx man arrested on child pornography charges

Christopher Lamar Roberts, 48, of Onyx, was arrested on April 30 and charged with possession of child pornography and distribution of child pornography, both felony offenses.
