Claude Maynard Townsend, 66, of Onyx and formerly Pomona, Calif., died May 7, 2009, peacefully in his home. J.R., as he was known to most, was born in Orange County, Calif., to Claude and Flossie (Morris) Townsend. He was educated in Rosemead, Calif., and graduated from Rosemead High School.

J.R. worked as a tool and die machinist for 18 years at Ajaz Hardware Manufacturing Co., then on to various manufacturers creating machines for their wares. He retired in 2004 and moved to Onyx with his wife, Susan. J.R.’s interests and hobbies included motorized gliders, antique car shows and his restored 1955 Oldsmobile Super 88. While retired he enjoyed tilling his land with his father’s tractor. J.R.’s lifestyle focused on details. J.R. was always proactive, he planned his projects and the results were completed right ‘the first time’ everytime.

Survived by his wife Susan; children, Christie (Andrew) Warring and son Rick (Dawn) Townsend, and their families, including five grandchildren. J.R. was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Larry and Bob.

A memorial service and a “Celebration of Life” for family and friends will be held May 16 at the Larry Dillard residence in Onyx at 2:00 p.m.
