Piute fire contained to 3.4 acres

On Tuesday May 27, 2009 at approximately 3:10 p.m., a call was

received by the Kern County Fire Department for a wildfire started from numerous lightning strikes in the Red mountain area off Caliente-Bodfish Road. Approximately 100 firefighters responded to the incident from Kern County Fire, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Forest Service working under a Unified Command.

Upon arrival, crews were faced with several fires from the lightning.

Crews worked to contain the fires with hose lines, hand crews, and

assistance from aircraft water drops. The fire was extinguished with no property damage or injuries reported. The fire burned approximately 3.4 acres and was 100 percent contained as of 5:03 p.m.

    " Same day as the Piute Fire, if you were to drive up Evan's Rd.in Wofford Heights(Hwy 155) about a mile up the road on the right we had a pretty intence lightening strike caused fire, I saw a big group of Hot Shot Fire Crews and 1 helicopter making water drops...The Fire Department (Generic Term including all the crews) I again can't thank the crews who work up here enough...they are so fast that the news media couldn't report fast enough...This is one happy WH resident who will NEVER be able to express THANK YOU enough to suffice "
