Flag Day June 14: Proudly fly your flag

The Fourth of July was traditionally celebrated as America's birthday, but the idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the Flag is believed to have first originated in 1885. BJ Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the pupils in the Fredonia, Wisconsin Public School, District 6, to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of The Stars and Stripes) as 'Flag Birthday'. In numerous magazines and newspaper articles and public addresses over the following years, Cigrand continued to enthusiastically advocate the observance of June 14 as 'Flag Birthday', or 'Flag Day'.

Collision claims Caliente man

On May 25, Leroy Neher, 56, of Caliente, was driving his 2003 Ford Expedition eastbound from the private driveway of 11535 Caliente Creek Road at an unknown slow rate of speed when for unknown reasons he failed to stop and yield the right of way to Kevin Caffee’s, 18, of Caliente, GMC Sierra pickup which was traveling southbound on Caliente Creek Road at a stated speed of 55 mph. As Neher entered the roadway directly in front of Caffee’s vehicle, Caffee applied his brakes and steered towards the left in an attempt to avoid the collision. Caffee’s vehicle subsequently struck the left front driver’s door of Neher’s vehicle at which time Neher’s vehicle quickly spun in a counterclockwise direction as it overturned. Neher was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision and was partially ejected from the vehicle. Neher succumbed to his injuries while on scene. Shirley Neher, 70, of Caliente, was airlifted to Kern Medical Center where she was treated for minor to moderate injuries and Caffee was transported to Kern Medical Center by ambulance where he too was treated for moderate injuries.
