KV Aquatics Program summer swim program begins, all ages welcome

Published on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 10:21 PM PDT

More than 70 percent of the children in this valley under the age of 17 do not know how to swim. After two successful Fundraisers, Kern Valley Aquatics Program (KVAP) is proud to present swim lessons for all ages at the South Fork Middle School in Weldon.

Scholarships are available and based on a first come first serve and need basis.

Register for lessons online at www.kvap.org. For more information email info@kvap.org or call 760-299-2030. Open/Family Swim, Lap Swim and Sr. Aquatics do not require registration.

Kern Valley Search and Rescue volunteers, like Vonnie Mathewson, at right, came to the South Fork Community Pool last year and taught young swimmers about water safety.

Kern Valley Aquatics Program (KVAP) is Not for Profit, offering swim lessons for anyone ages 0-99. Our mission is to make every child and adult in the Kern River Valley Water safe. " I am a teacher, and my daughter attends this program. I have been very impressed with the program organization level, and the quality of the swim instructors. My daughter is 5 years old, and she can now float in the water unassisted, and she can "dog paddle" from one side of the pool to the other. My wife and I feel much better now that she has the skill to take of herself in the water should it be necessary. She is at level 3 now, but we plan to continue with the classes until level 5. Great job! "

" If I remember right, the swim program was started years ago by the Red Cross when the school was built in South Fork and did not cost anything. I don't quite understand why this group takes precedence over the Red Cross who also had life guards and the program was facilitated by the State or County. This 501-C3 group was inspired, and I assume funded by Holly Spohn Gross. That is what I remember reading in an email she wrote. "

" There have been many erroneous posts about grant money, and typically they have nothing to do with the topic at hand. "Truth's" latest remarks about 'teaching kids to swim and having fun all summer with grant money' is another shining example. To clarify, is that what you think pays for the aquatic program? It is my understanding that families able to afford the cost of swimming lessons pay. Those that can't receive a 'scholarship' (the fee is paid for them)- thanks to sucessful fund raisers and donations - not grant money. "

" ...and adding to the statement by kv res...."this program will get a lot of notarity as it supports the children in this valley, programs for children will be the only allotment of future revenue coming into this area," at least that is the way it looks from "outside in." We know that over 4 years ago, young professionals who moved here started forming youth programs systematically, even though the population of this valley is mostly Senior Citizens, but who cares about fishing when you can teach kids to swim and have fun all summer with grant money? "
