Eleven homes affected by structure fire in Mt. Mesa
On Tuesday June 30 at approximately 1:42 p.m., a call was received by the Kern County Fire Department for a structure fire in the 4500 block of Juniper Lane in Mt Mesa. Approximately 100 firefighters responded to the incident, from Kern County Fire Department, US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.

Feds vow to seize California Parks if closed by State
The National Park Service is threatening to block funding and take over several of California's most prominent state parks if state legislators close them to help balance the budget. They include Angel Island and Mt. Diablo near San Francisco; Point Sur in Big Sur; and beaches at Fort Ord Dunes near Monterey, Point Mugu State Park near Malibu, and Border Fields along the Mexican border.

Chris Frazier tapped to replace retiring Reider as Kern County Superintendent of Schools
The Kern County Board of Education voted unanimously June 9 to appoint Christine Frazier as Kern County’s 20th superintendent of schools. The appointment is effective July 1. Frazier replaces Larry E. Reider who will retire June 30.

Lake Isabella woman involved in rollover on Hwy. 178
On June 13, at approximately 6 p.m., Crystal Dedascalom of Lake Isabella was driving westbound on Hwy 178, just west of Vista Grande Drive in Weldon, when she allowed her 2003 Ford minivan to drift into the oncoming lane. Dedascalom swerved to avoid a collision with an oncoming car and lost control of her vehicle, which ran off the road and overturned. One occupant was airlifted to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield and others were taken to Kern Valley Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.

Meetings planned for Giant Sequoia National Monument Plan-Alternative
The Sequoia National Forest is continuing the collaborative effort to establish the Giant Sequoia National Monument Management Plan. The purpose of the Monument Plan is to provide a 10-15 year vision, with direction and overall guidance on the management of lands and uses within the Monument. The Monument was created on April 15, 2000, by Presidential Proclamation and is located in south-central California.

Officials crack down on boaters
Recreational boaters may want to think twice before reaching for that cold beer this weekend. The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA), in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard, launches Operation Dry Water the weekend of June 26 - 28, 2009. Operation Dry Water is an enforcement effort designed to highlight the dangers of operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Boating Under the Influence (BUI) is illegal in all 50 states and territories. Impaired boaters found to be boating under the influence can expect penalties to be severe. They may include fines, jail, and loss of boating or even driving privileges. In 2007, the U.S. Guard reported 21percent of all boating fatalities were a result of alcohol use. Marine law enforcement officers, as part of Operation Dry Water, will be out in full force, searching for boat operators whose Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) exceeds the national limit of .08%. Authorities contend this BUI crackdown is just as important as highway patrol officers arresting drunk drivers.

Whitewater Wednesday - Big Splash
A group of rafters enjoy the Kern River rapids during Whitewater Wednesday on June 17. The annual event is sponsored by the Kernville Chamber of Commerce. “The event went very smoothly. We had 303 participants, some from as far away as Florida and Arizona and San Diego. People think that the event is attended mostly by locals, but that isn’t the case. This year the majority of people were actually individuals from the Barstow, Victorville and Apple Valley areas,” said Michelle Sweet, Office Manager for the Kernville Chamber of Commerce. The event, which is in its 22nd year, saw all six local rafting companies participating. Sweet went on to add, “They all assisted in providing the necessary transportation, guides and rafts. It was a really great event.”

Marijuana bust in mountains south of Havilah
On June 29, at about 6:00 a.m., deputies from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Major Violators Unit and Special Operations Group, with assistance of officers from the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), Campaign Against Marijuana Planting (C.A.M.P.), and the Department of Fish and Game located five marijuana grows on Federal land in a remote area south of Havilah.

Galloping Goose bikers descend on Kern Valley
Two members of the Galloping Goose Motorcycle Club, based in Springfield, Mo., were arrested Friday night when Kern County Sheriff's deputies assigned to directed patrol in the Kern Valley area stopped three motorcycles to investigate possible vehicle code violations. Deputies arrested of two individuals, Danti Kirby, 34, of Pella, Iowa and Matthew Korwel, 28, of St. Louis Mo. Kirby and Korwel were arrested on charges of possession of a deadly weapon and being members of a street gang. They were transported to Central Receiving Facility in Bakersfield and booked on the charges.

SUSPICION OF DUI: On 6-23-09, Michael Ramon Galanski, 40, of Lake Isabella, was stopped because he wasn’t wearing his seatbelt. The odor of an alcoholic beverage was coming from within the subject’s vehicle. Galanski failed to perform the field sobriety tests as explained and demonstrated and was arrested for DUI.
