Crappie are being caught around the lake in the coves, and along the rocky shorelines. French Gulch, Boulder Gulch, Piney Point, Joughlin Cove, Browns Cove, Stine Cove, and Lime Dike are the hottest places to fish for crappie.
Trout fishermen caught their limits this week in the north end of the lake. Anglers on shore are fishing off the river bank below the cemetery, and boat fishermen are working the area where the cool river water enters the lake.Other trout fishermen had good results at Paradise Cove, Camp Nine, Rocky Point, and on both sides of the dams. Baits working the best are powerbait, nightcrawlers, and salmon eggs. Boat anglers are doing real good bait fishing off the points, and trolling off shore 6-12 feet down with flashy spoons, spinners, and plastic minnows.
Good size trout are being caught in the flume in the morning and early evening hours on powerbait, salmon eggs, and nightcrawlers.
Fly fishermen are seeing a lot of action in the Kern River north of the cemetery. Anglers report the best way to access the secluded area is from the dirt roads on the airport side. The upper Kern River and streams are being hiked and fished. Anglers report the high mountain streams are clear, flowing nicely, and fishing is good.

Artificials are the preferred baits to use.

Catfish are biting all around the lake with fishermen in the south end seeing the most action. They are feeding in the morning hours, and again in the evening on hotdogs, mackerel, and nightcrawlers. Boat anglers report they are hitting throughout the day on plastic minnows.
The best type of plastic minnow is one that imitates the size and color of the gamefish (green/blue), and baitfish (silver or gold). Boat fishermen are trolling six to ten feet down, and 20 to 30 feet out along the shoreline.
Bill Chase from the French Gulch Marina said, catfish are hitting real good, and fishermen are catching good size crappie along the lake's north shore line in the Boulder Gulch area.
