NEWS UPDATE: Juvenile Arrested for Setting Weldon Fire

Published on Thursday, July 16, 2009 9:20 PM PDT

A 17-year-old juvenile has been arrested for starting the “Perry” fire in the Hillview Acres area of Weldon Friday, July 10.

Arson Investigators from the Kern County Fire Department arrived on scene and were advised, from eyewitness accounts, about a person of interest, said Sean Collins, Public Information Officer for the Kern County Fire Department. Further investigation resulted in the arrest of the juvenile, he said. “It has subsequently been identified that this person is also responsible for another fire in the same area in June of 2008,” Collins said.

The July 10 fire threatened several structures, however, was contained at 24 acres without any damage, according to Collins.

US Forest Service helicopter 523 makes a water drop on the Perry fire in the Hillview Acres neighborhood of Weldon Friday, July 10. Arson investigators with the Kern County Fire Department have determined the fire was started by a 17-year-old juvenile.

He added, “Community involvement, early notification and a quick response by the Kern County Fire Department Arson Investigation Unit were instrumental in bringing a successful conclusion to this case.”
