Two missing hikers return home safely

Joe Collins and John Gaetz, cities unknown, were reported missing by their families to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday, about 5:00 p.m. The men were last seen about 9:00 a.m., Sunday, when they left for a nature hike and to explore caves in the Claraville area.

Two arrested in marijuana growing operation

On July 31, deputies assigned to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office Major Violator Unit served a search warrant near Cane Creek, west of Wofford Heights, on U.S. Forest Service property. A total of 3,158 marijuana plants were found and destroyed, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Department.

KEDC begins educating girls in the energy industry with grant funds

Kern Economic Development Corporation will kick-off its pilot program, the Alliance of Women in Energy (AWE), with the help of a $7,500 grant awarded by Chevron. The grant’s funds will be applied to the Alliance of Women in Energy (AWE) mentoring initiative created by Kern EDC to promote innovation-centered education and to increase economically disadvantaged female students’ achievements in STEM-related (science, technology, engineering and math) curriculum. AWE will provide a coordinated, year-long mentoring program in low-income high schools in Bakersfield, and students will have the opportunity to obtain one-on-one mentoring with local professional women in a cross-section of energy-related businesses. The program will also provide the girls with real-life examples of career opportunities in the energy sector.
