Cal Water is out of control

Published on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 10:19 PM PDT

My water bill is seven times as much as it was in the year 2000 for the same amount of water. If you think this is not possible do the math. It cost now almost $50 before I use a drop. All my neighbors agree this is too much. When will it stop? Is Cal Water getting the water from China?

Leaving my house this morning the water guy told me I had a shut off notice (this is not about the guys in the trucks they are always polite to me and understanding). So I go to the office and say to the girl, “My water bill is going up and up and we are scraping by we use as little water as possible.” The girl behind the desk said, “That’s what they all say.” The man there said my bill has not gone up seven times, and he asked, “Did you start with zero?” (The increase depends on how much you used before.) Yah he’s right sometimes my bill was zero, when I was not at home and not using water. I guess what is really getting to me is how unsympathetic they were there. I told them I had a newborn at home but nothing effected them, they had no kind words, no help. Want to know the last thing Cal Water said? “Pay your bill.” Like my problem was so easy to fix. Oh yah! Forgot I had all this cash in my pocket. The way they acted was like I was supposed to shut up and take it. I was a bad person for complaining.

I want to see their books. I want to know where all my money is going. I want to start a petition. I want to be reimbursed for being over charged all the past years. I want Cal Water out of this valley. I’ll go to Sacramento and wake up that Hollywood movie star. There is no way, shape or form they need this much money to get us water and we here in the valley are not so rich. We can fix this problem folks.

" ti would also like to know why cal water is so high. they need to get rid of that service charge that ends up being more then the bill itself. my mother lives in bodfish and is on social security, she get 845.00 per month to live on. her rent is a'bout half that, with all of her other utility bill and food here comes the water bill, she simply does not have the money. how is she supposed to live? " Walter Guy how long have you been working for Cal Water?
Every water company in the state is under the same "water quality" rules, yet they arent stickin it to thier customers like Cal Water.

    Think profit.......forget anything else. "

" Farming is the real water thief in CA. Farming accounts for 80 percent of the state's water usage, according to the Pacific Institute. That means that MOST of our water is exported to both other states and other countries as farm exports. So we sell 80% of the state's water to farmers for 10 cents on the dollar and they resell at FULL RATE through crops. "

Why isn't the local representative for this area invloved in this critical issue....Now you have a choice to eat, water, or cut back somewhere else, but can bet Cal Water will never lower thier rates on thier own. "

" Well, nobody is really serious about Cal Water.....the people in the US are long suffering and short on doing something about it....Hello.

The Kern goes by us everyday and the water is a lot cheaper in Bakersfield I'll bet.... Cal Water should be in prison....Theres plenty of water here,
thats not the problem, the problem is Cal Waters strangle hold on the supply and the Pay-me Off PUC.
I Pay 4.007 fer CCF, and I agree its cheaper at Vons....but nobody is going to do anything about it. "

" It's funny, all the people (myself included) who grew up drinking all this supposedly arsenic filled water and came out just fine. And, are we the only place around that has all this arsenic? Everyone else seems to have low water bills, so it must be just us then. "

Richard wrote on Oct 9, 2009 11:48 PM:

" Unless the Federal Government eases the Arsenic Standards for small water companies (alas Cal Water is a Major Company and I think wouldnt be able to apply) we must either accept super high water costs or in some way (well water vs lake river water) buy and treat the water that passes us every day. These current costs are only the tip of the Iceburg, count on it. "

I had unlimited water at $25 a month and no meter before Cal Water put the meters in. Now its around $100 and Im using far less than before. However it is true that the Federal Standards for Arsenic were made 1000% more strict and that sense we in Wofford Heights use mostly well water the cost to treat the available supply has gone over the top. However without Federal help we like Cal Water are helplessly traped. "

I live in Ridgecrest and my water bill for a family of 5 is 35 dollars every other month, sometimes 50 depending on how much I water my grass. There is only one reason I can think of why your bill is so high, and that is GREED. "

" We are on a well system where we live, not our own private well. The cost of water is very reasonable but there are draw-backs. We are responsible for keeping up with testing and compliance and the few homeowners on the system have to bear the cost. Also, when the water table is low, we run out of water. I would almost be thankful for a bona fide water company. However, the cost going up as it has for you guys would be a burden. Water, though, is a necessity. "

I just don't see people coming on here without an agenda and say how they have no problem paying such a high cost. Another remark about how courteous and polite the workers were to him- yeah right! Then Marie's response that all responsible adults are suppose to budget to be able to pay for soaring costs of everything- well- Marie, what if one's paycheck doesn't increase!!
    I agree with Mr.Morgan. P.S. Cal Water is a ripoff! "

" Mr. Morgan is out of control. I think water is a great deal, just do the math. My water bill for a family of four is approx. $100.00 with service charge and 15 ccf. A ccf is about 750 gallons of water. This makes our usage 11,250 gallons a month. when you divide that into $100.00 it equals about .009 a gal. we'll call it .01. So for $3.33 a day (the cost of a 40 or pack of smokes)all I have to do is turn the little lever and water comes out. I'ts a bargain. "

The USEPA sets standards for arsenic, and that's the problem. Here's what the last Cal Water approved rate increase by the CPUC said:

Ordering Paragraph seven of D.06-08-011 states CWS may begin recovering in rates the revenue required for the authorized improvements upon their completion and placement into service. The "Arsenic Compliance and Water Supply Reliability" improvements (Projects Nos. 12299, 12300 and 12301) cost CWS $7,092,721. The expenses for these projects were capped in D.06-08-011 at $5,510,000. "

Cal Water delivers more water to consumers than any other entity in CA.
Cal Water's monthly fees before paying for the water needs to be looked at by a law school, or equally interested party. They obviously are pure profit.(like health insurance companies VS Medicare)
Their only legal responsibility is to their stock holders, not us.
Where is Ms Fuller on this issue?--totally quiet. "

It is true that the cost of living is rising in the United States, but looking for a person to blame in the office is "barking up the wrong tree" The many times I have gone to Cal Water the employees were very courteous and professional. But Im sure Albert went in there with a huge smile to start off with,LOL. Unsympathetic? I'm going to tell the DMV I have kids, maybe they will give me a discount. Moron! I love California and if you want cheaper living, try Idaho!! "

As responsible adults we are supposed to budget for a cost of living increase and we are supposed to pay our bills on time. I am sure that Cal Water, like any other company, has rising costs that need to be covered in order to provide us with the best quality of water.
