Kindness or irresponsibility?

Published on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 10:19 PM PDT

Are you a responsible pet owner (cats), or are you one of those who feel sorry for the stray cats and feed them? Do you consider yourself a kind, caring person by feeding the strays, allowing them to breed and increase the stray cat population in the neighborhood?

If you care about your pets, be responsible, keep as many as you can care for. Have them spayed or neutered. You would be acting in a kind, humane manner and also be showing consideration for your neighbors and the problem the strays are to them.

If you think feeding the strays is an act of kindness, visit the Lake Isabella Animal Shelter on Hwy. 178 in Southlake. Many cats are destroyed weekly because of irresponsible people feeding the strays which continue to breed. If you can afford to buy cat food, you can afford to have your cat spayed or neutered. Love your pets, care for them and be a responsible pet owner.

What effort is that? I can't afford to spay or neuter every stray cat I find. NOT putting them in the shelter is a death sentence. They starve to death or become coyote bait. At least in the shelter they have the opportunity get adopted. "

There is a low-cost spay/neuter clinic coming soon to the valley. I really hope people take advantage of it and start getting their pets fixed! It's so important. The animals need us. Please Spay & neuter, & encourage your friends/family to as well. Let's cut down the overwhelming amount of shelter drop-offs & euthanization together, as a responsible, compassionate and humane community. Feel free to email me. Thanks. "

" I can't believe people are defending feeding strays. Do you know how nature works? Animals produce offspring depending on the availability of food. I know of 2 people in the valley who started off feeding a few strays and now have well over 30 coming to their house for food. If you feel sorry for cats with no home why are you adding to the problem? If you really cared you'd catch them and spay or neuter them. To me that is not showing love of animals but the opposite. "

" There is no one to call.....they don't respond to cat calls because there are too many. There are humane catchers you can purchase. Catch your strays and take them to the shelter. I had three when I moved into my new house. I fed them for three weeks until they became "friendly" and then I caught them and took them to the shelter. You are helping them whether they are adopted or not. If you just keep feeding them, they'll double and triple and our problem will continue. "

" we live next to people whom have a number of cats at least 7 and kittens they DO NOT get them fixed this is like the third litter by different momma cats what can we do to make these people understand we dont want all these cats running around leaving their fecal matter and urine all over our yards please what can we do they dont listen to us who do you call? "

" The cats that are strays and ferals are not to blame. If they cannot have a home, they should not starve. Pets are here for our health, enjoyment and love. They depend upon our care to sustain them. If we cannot afford to feed the strays, fine. If we cannot catch them and provide them with a home, too bad. But let's show compassion for the animals that others discard whenever possible. "

    " To: "Kindness or irresponsibility?"
Your comment doesn't make much sense. Are you saying that a responsible cat owner who keeps their cat indoors, has it spayed, keeps up on the shots, etc..is being irresponsible to stray cats by feeding them??
What does make sense is for cat owners to take responsibility for THEIR cats by fixing them and keeping them indoors! The ones who can afford to buy cat food- are NOT the ones who are NOT having their pets fixed. "

" I agree with last comment. All of our cats are spayed and they see a vet annually. If I see a stray or ferral cat and can't catch it then I would rather feed it than let it starve. If I could catch it and not find the owner then off to the pound or I can keep it. These are the choices but letting them starve is not a choice "

" I don't think it's an either/or situation. I also have multiple cats; they are all spayed or neutered and all live indoors. So I think I am a responsible owner. I also would feed stray cats if I knew about them. I don't think letting them starve to death is a very kind solution. "

" Sometimes it's not that simple. I am a multible cat owner. All my cats have been spayed or neutered. There are strays that live in the area that are so wild you can't even begin to touch them. I feed them because I would rather see a healthy wild stray, than one taken to the humane society (if you could catch them) to be destroyed. "
