Who’s being served?

Kern Valley Hospital, what is it and why are we always asked to fund it out of the property taxes? First let me say I’ve had the fortune or misfortune to have had to use it exactly once and will never again. They overcharged me (corrected upon my insistance) and charged many times the normal and customary fee my Insurance Company pays for Emergency Treatment. They don't accept most insurance payments as payment in full, thus the patient can be left with a hefty bill if not on Welfare and Medical.

What is the primary function of the hospital? From what I can see it’s a primary care facility for aged patients of many of the "friends" who donate their time and resourses to help care for family members and friends. Why should the general property owning public be asked to fund this local "confined care/hospice operation?" This is not a county hospital nor is it a public facility administered with the concept of treating the needs of the whole community, it’s a special interest group catering to a few residents and their immediate family members and friends. It should be taken private and treated like any other private facility for the care of the favored few.

" Very true, Hatetosayit, but my problem was actually a broken bone. I'll say that again - THEY MISDIAGNOSED A BROKEN BONE. They didn't take any X-rays, despite my request that they do just that. They made it clear that they thought I was a druggie looking for a fix, and they intended to make me wait as long as possible before they gave it to me. The really horrible thing is, I told them that I don't and won't take painkillers (not even asprin) but they gave me a prescription for a strong narcotic anyhow. That's inexcusable. "

" I've had some less than great experiences with the hospital, however, I think it is fair to acknowledge that medicine is not always cut and clear. Even the best doctors will tell you sometimes medicine is a guessing game. Different illnesses share the same symptoms. That being said, I still have issues with their billing. How come I can go to Bakersfield and have the same test ran without paying anything or much less? This not just billing for the ER...Its radiology...labworks... somehow it always ends up with massive debts for me. "

" but I agree. For some reason, I can't understand I always owe money when I go to the hospital. My insurance company says its the hospital's billing practices, the hospital says it my insurance company. Last month my son needed an Ultrasound. The hospital wanted me to pay $270(my share they told me). I asked my doctor to send the paper work to Quest imaging... my out of pocket was couple of dollars. I've talked to other people with similar experiences. I sort of think they don't know how to properly bill. "

" Ann, I'm with you! I don't know one member of the Auxiliary who would say "shut up for a change" with anger. I'm also convinced that this person is not a member because they obviously don't know the voting procedure (one vote) nor do they know the duties of the 1st VP (in name only). How sad. If you feel as strongly about your belefs as truth does, why hide behind made up names? Its a very ill person, this truth. "

" And no, I don't have unrealistic expectations of what my ER visit will be like. I worked in one of the state's busiest ERs for many years. There is a difference between "busy" and just being unprepared to handle the standard patient load. There is a difference between "overwhelmed" and just being accustomed to using that as an easy excuse for being apathetic. And there should be NO excuse for being nasty to patients. The assistant berated someone in the waiting room in front of me for coming in during their busy time. This "

" Yes, Mac, I did file the patient survey sheet. I also filed complaints with the state regarding the physician and the staff. The reality is, behavior like this only exists because the hospital environment allows it. If the CNA was reprimanded the first time she tried to chat up a nurse about a date while ignoring a patient, that behavior would either stop or the CNA should be fired. If a physician, even as an independent contractor, informed the hospital administration that he was often receiving charts without proper background information, that behavior would be "

" Could it be that one of the posters to this comment is a reincarnation of the various truths? Perhaps Auxiliary? The "just shut up for a change!" was a tip-off. Do people really talk to each other like that? Woe, have mercy. "

" I am unhappy to read this letter and another one that appears here, also. There have been positive accounts of the Healthcare District, and it is too bad that there is so much in-fighting and harsh words spoken regarding the calamities that may or may not still exist there. The Hospital was one of the deal-breakers in our decision to purchase a home here in the KRV for retirement and to live as much as possible until that day comes. I will continue to wish it the best and hope that problems are resolved. "

" I'd be interested to know what hospitals accept "usual and customary" as payment in full. Generally a straight insurance will pay 80% of usual and customary and everything outside of that is the patient's responsibility. Why do you think medical bankrupties among even fully insured people are rampant in this country? Blame the insurance companies who are more interested in profit than in your health, not the providers. "

Simply out if your not on wellfare or Medicare if your on private Insurance get hold of your savings, because they dont accept normal and customary rate!!!! "

" I've had the misfortune of needing this hospital's emergency services once, and it was deplorable. The staff was beyond rude, they had no concept of triage, and after asking my medical history the employee proceeded to chat with a nurse about a recent date without writing any information down. Her reason was "The doctor will ask again anyways." I was wildly misdiagnosed, given a medication which was totally inappropriate for both my actual condition and my diagnosed condition, and sent home in agony. This isn't the kind of care I want one penny of my tax dollars supporting. "

It really gets my goat when people make statements that are so inacurrate...why don't you take the time to do some research before you embarrass yourself with such wrong info. You also didn't mention how long ago your one visit to our hospital was...it makes a big difference. Also, our hospital IS A PUBLIC FACILITY! Geez man....your entire letter is full of lies! "
