Shuttle bus a vital need

Published on Tuesday, October 20, 2009 10:19 PM PDT

Our valley is in need of a shuttle bus to travel from Bodfish Canyon Rd. to the Library at the other end of town throughout the day. With it, people could shop anywhere on the boulevard. They could grocery shop, visit the welfare office, library, go to doctors appointments, thrift stores and banks.

I have a vehicle but the other day it was in the shop. I rode the bus and disembarked at the Senior Center. I walked to Valley Thrift Shop at the other end of the boulevard as there wasn’t a bus available for at least an hour. That bus would only take me to the plaza. I’d still have to walk the rest of the way as the bus only travels to that end of town a few times a day. Riding a shuttle bus, I could have been at work in minutes.

I am 75 years old and won’t be able to drive much longer. I will depend on others to drive me as I won’t be able to walk that distance. A shuttle bus is ideal for seniors, the disabled and families with young children who cannot drive or don’t have a car.

I know there is a Dial-a-Ride, but it’s almost impossible to get a ride on it. I have tried several times and have not been successful once. Shuttle service would only require one bus. It would make lots of money while helping those who are currently under served.

Sign the petition at the Valley Thrift Shop and the Kern Valley Sun. Come to the Kern Regional Transit meeting at the Senior Center on Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 4:00-7:30 p.m. The more people that show up, the more the county will look at our proposal. You can make a difference.

" I, too, am supportive of a Shuttle Bus. Will be unable to attend the meeting on Tuesday because of logistics. I wish this effort much luck and am sorry to miss the meeting. "
