Glad you asked...

Q:We’ve received phone calls during the past few weeks asking, “What’s the construction on the boulevard across from Tank Park? I hear it’s a new WalMart. Is that true?”

A: Richard Rowe, of Wofford Heights, passed along information he received from Thomas McCutcheon of Kern County Waste Management Department:

The area is the state permitted application area for the fully treated water from the Reeder Tract wastewater treatment plant. The work is being done by a contractor retained by the Kern County Engineering and Survey Services Department to return the area to its condition prior to the Piute fire and flood last year.

Bulldozers work to restore the area of Lake Isabella Blvd. and Webb Ave. to its condition before the Piute fire and subsequent flood left a three- to four-feet layer of mud in July 2008.

Basically, the three to four foot deep layer of mud that was washed into the area by the flood is being removed. Mr. Bob Downs, an engineer with the Engineering and Survey Services Department is coordinating the work of the contractor.

" A Wal-Mart would destroy the local businesses and also the ambiance of the area. It may be in the best interest of our Valley to have the local businesses succeed and not fail. I would like to see us work on bringing a variety of goods to local businesses that may be lacking and keeping the prices competitive. We can only do this, though, if everyone would unite and work together to keep this Valley unique and alive. It will be difficult, at best, but those are my thoughts. "

" Lets get to the point. Refined human waste is being sprayed out their.

Think about whats coming out of the reeder track, supposely treated and either SPRAYED in the feild or it goes down the creek next to the park. Then into the river. Think about the water that is being pumped up by erskin creek water Co. Doesnt that sound nasty????

It was another wasted program money spent by the county "

" We certainly don't need a WalMart! That would put every one of our local businesses OUT of business! What type of business do we need, anyway? We have everything we need right here....we're not desperate for anything. If you want WalMart and major chains, move back down to Bakersfield or wherever you came from. We like our valley just the way it is. "

" What a shame that land isn't being used for a new Walmart, or for that matter, any other type of new business in our area, which we so desperately need.. .. "
