Broncs push Desert out of their way

Kern Valley wasted little effort in improving their overall record, but more importantly their High Desert League record.

The Broncs are currently 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the HDL. They are tied for first with Bishop and Frazier Mountain.

On Friday, Kern Valley dispatched the Scorpions 33-6 using a strong second quarter. The Broncs ripped off 21 straight points to take a 30-0 lead into the break.

Kern Valley got on the board first in the opening quarter as they took the opening kick off and went 65 yards in five plays to set the tone of the game.

Warren Pappas scored the first touchdown from seven yards away and Jordan Lawson added the extra point to make it 7-0.

The scoring run was set up by a44 yard catch and run from Kyler Emery to Lawson.

Twice the teams exchanged punts for control of field position. The Broncs won that battle as they pinned the Scorpions deep at their own one yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, the Desert runner was tackled in the end zone for a safety. Travis Gibson was credited with the safety to put the Broncs up 9-0.

Mark Eisenhauer began the scoring in the second quarter as he took the hand off and romped seven yards to pay dirt. Then it was Pappas’ turn as he scored his second touchdown of the game as he also went over from seven yards out.

The final Kern Valley tally in the first half came on a 74-yard scoring toss from Emery to Pappas.

In the second half, the Scorpions put together a 20 play drive that came up empty, while the Broncs only points came from a 33-yard field goal from Lawson.

Desert scored late in the game for their only points to make the final score 33-6 for Kern Valley.

The Broncs rushed for 203 yards and threw for 144 to total 347 yards on the night.

Led by Eisenhauer who carried the ball 13 times for 106 yards. Pappas rushed for 57 yards on eight touches, while Gibson had 23 yards on four rushes.

Emery was 5-of-12 passing for the 144 yards, He completed two passes to Pappas for 92 yards. Lawson had the one catch for 44 yards, while Gibson and Anthony Hernandez each grabbed one pass for four yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Broncs were led by Josh Stuart with 15 tackles.

Gibson was credited with nine tackles, while Pappas had eight tackles. Ronnie Grannan collected seven tackles, while Robbie Fisher had six tackles.

Head coach Ben Goffinet commenting on the game said, “I was very pleased with how we played in all phases, especially our offense and defensive line. We need to continue to stay focused to prepare for this week’s game in Bishop.”

The Broncos of Bishop are currently 2-0 and tied with the Broncs and the Falcons for first place in the HDL.

This game on Friday between Kern Valley and Bishop will give the winner a leg up heading into the final two games of the regular season. Both team still have to face Frazier Mountain and could potentially create a three-way tie for the top.
