“The state only issues four tags for this area, three of which are preference points only, and my son drew the one random tag out of the four,” said Justin’s mother Jackie Steinberg, .
“Justin was successful with his Antlerless Elk using a Remington 243 100 grain nozzle partition at 150 yards. He shot it on the first day of the season after the third hunt of the day; it was Oct. 3. It was his first big game animal,” said Kyle.
Justin followed up his elk hunt with a successful mule deer hunt three days later on Oct. 6. He shot a 3 x 3 Mule Deer from 50 yards away with his Remington 243. He used an 85 grain Barnes Tripleshock lead free bullet in the D-9 Zone area.
“This was his first buck,” said proud father Kyle.
Shooting an Elk and Mule Deer in one season at the age of 12 is more than exciting, but Justin’s excitement doesn’t stop there, he was one of 25 youth hunters chosen to hunt on the 270,000 acre Tejon Ranch on Dec. 22-23 for an Antlerless Mule Deer.
His parents are members of the California Deer Assoc. and they applied online for the application for the hunt which is is sponsored by the California Deer Association.
Justin‘s name was selected and he spend a portion of his Christmas break hunting on the largest private ranch in California.
His mother said, “He sure is lucky.” And how does Justin feel? Well, he said, “I think I may want a career being a professional hunter/fisherman and be on television.
