Young motorcyclist lucky to be alive

“We don’t know exactly how fast he was going,” said CHP Patrolman Ray. “He passed me on Hwy. 178 at over 100 miles an hour.”

John Kyle Stevens, 18, a Kern Valley High School student and member of the wrestling team, was arrested Saturday afternoon for allegedly evading a police officer and reckless driving.

Kern County Firefighter Bret Eckhard, left, and KCSO Deputy Josh Shotwell inspect the remains of Johnny Stephens’ motorcycle Saturday afternoon at the bottom of Bodfish Canyon.

According to Ray, Stephens’ high-speed odyssey came to an end after he sped through the neighborhood, onto the dirt and then came out at the site of the crash.

At the point of impact, Stephens reportedly flew threw the air “as high as the power lines” and landed in a ditch.

“You can see his back tire is as bald as can be,” said Ray. “I’m not exactly sure what he hit. He ran to the ditch and stripped his helmet off and ran to hide.”

Ray added, “As far as the firefighters and the ambulance people say, he’s doing alright, just banged up a little bit, luckily.”

Stephens was arrested and transported to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield for treatment. He was admitted to the hospital as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, which were described as minor.

Stephens was not available for comment, while online Superior Court records show no action pending at presstime.

You suggest that people should stick to their own lives and stay to their own. That is very good advice and I would like to suggest to you to stay off of our street (Clark St)the next time you decide to outrun the police so that we can stick to our own lives and live them in peace and safety without worrying about you hitting our elderly, our children, or our pets with your bike. Please stay out of our neighborhood until you grow up and act like a responsible young man.We will be happy to sick to our own. John, please learn from your error in judgment and own up to the respect and support you are receiving. I, for one, wish you the best and offer hugs. "

Roads that are already dangerous to drive on due to the nature of their design. I often wonder why young people act this way.. they make 'tributes & crosses' for friends who've passed & have very emotional dramatic displays of emotions when one of their friends 'dies accidentally', but have no worries about going 100 mph on hwy 178. Parents, CHECK YOUR KIDS, enlighten them before you buy for them. "

He could have hit someone and then where would he be? So yes he is lucky; that he didn't hurt someone. He lost control of his vehicle so he must have been doing something wrong. "

Their lives are put on the line each and every minute they are on-duty and many times even when off-duty. In a small community where there are many drug abusers and probation violaters, how are they to know in advance who they are about to come up against, especially if "fleeing" is involved and we do have reason to believe it was. " This story is exaggerated. The bottom line is his choices were poor. We were all young once. He's not had the easiest childhood which is no excuse but is a factor in his decision making. His extended family has taken him in and loves him dearly. John is a good kid and doesn't realize how much he's loved now. With their support and guidance he will learn from his mistake and perhaps do for another kid what his extended has done for him. You are correct, he is a young motorcyclist who's lucky to be alive.
