The Sophomore Broncs traveled to Mojave on Nov. 14 to take on the Bishop Broncos in the second round of youth football playoffs. In convincing fashion 37-8, the sophomore squad is moving on to the Super Bowl.

The Broncs received a bye the first week based on their unbeaten 9-0 regular season record. After last week’s victory they will play in the Super Bowl this Saturday in Boron against the Rim of the World Scots.

The Broncs found themselves down early as Bishop took an early lead in the first quarter on a 69 yard run. Bishop converted the extra point to open an 8-0 lead.

After that it was all Kern Valley as they stormed back with 38 unanswered points.

After Bishop scored and on the ensuing drive, Kern Valley kicked their offense into high gear. The Broncs got on the board when Zach Bushling hit Sammie Adams for a 12 yard touchdown pass. Bushling’s extra point was good to even the score 8-8 to end the first quarter.

On the Broncs very next offense possession, Jared Onstott scored on a quarterback keeper from 29 yards out to give the Broncs their first lead of the game 14-8. The extra point was no good.

The Broncs added to their lead late in the second quarter when Shane Hawk returned a Bishop punt 21 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good by Bushling giving the Broncs a 21-8 halftime lead.

Kern Valley added two more scores in the second half when Keaton Kissack scored from 10 yards out on a reverse and Austin Hurley’s 90 yard touchdown run. Both extra points were good by Bushling to give the Broncs a 37-8 win.

The leading rusher was Hurley with seven carries for 102 yards followed by Onstott with five carries for 46 yards and Bushing with 12 carries for 43 yards.

The defense was anchored inside by Blake Lanterman, Marty McIrvin, Armstrong, Bushling and Hurley.

The leading tacklers were Lanterman, Bushling (9), Armstrong (8), Hurley (7), McIrvin(6), Chase Oden and Hawk (5), Jacob Smith and Adams (2).

" It's really ashame that I can't feel happier about my son's team doing so well. Honestly, I feel ripped off after paying $150 and my boy never gets to play. The Coach puts him in minimal plays to meet the standards and he never gets to play in scrimmages even during practice. This is the second time my boy has had this coach and there won't be a third. This league will have to find another parent to rip off. "
