Free ‘Sing Out’ youth chorus begins Feb. 3
The Kernville United Methodist Church announced the start-up of a new after-school music program geared to children and youth. The “Sing Out” Youth Chorus, directed by the church Music Director, Gary Geivet, will include opportunities for singing, playing simple instruments, and assisting with production details. The church is providing this program, which is free of charge, to expand the limited music education and performance opportunities for the children and youth in our valley.

Forest Service asks for comments on rehabilitation work proposed for Upper Kern River Canyon
The Forest Service is asking for public comments on a proposal to conduct rehabilitation work at several designated dispersed recreation areas along the Upper Kern Wild and Scenic River corridor. The areas include Halfway, Thunderbird, Chico Flat, Corral Creek, Springhill, Old Goldledge, Ant Canyon, Chamise Flat, and Calkins Flat. These sites are located between the Kern River and adjacent State Mountain 99, north of Kernville. This work is needed to reestablish the ecological resilience and sustainability of the river corridor, to protect Wild and Scenic River values, and to implement travel management decisions.

Two wanted in connection with stolen property
On Jan. 24, Kern County Sheriff’s Deputies from the Kern Valley Substation served a search warrant at 4526 Wallace Lane in South Lake. Deputies were looking for stolen property from local burglaries. Evidence relating to this investigation was seized from the residence; however, deputies are still looking for Joshua Jay Powell, a white male, 25 years old. Powell is wanted for an outstanding arrest warrant charging him with possession of stolen property and theft.
