Community Voices: Thank you Kern River Valley
A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to receive donations from several locations in the valley on behalf of the Caravan of Compassion. Pick-ups started on Thursday at the Edward Jones office in Lake Isabella. A large tub was filled with toys and articles of clothing. While inside, the office manager and a customer eagerly reached into their pockets to add a monetary donation.

I love Kern Valley
I love Kern Valley, the fresh air is so wonderful. Fishing in the Kern river is so much fun! I have no problems living here, and all the people love to visit because of the lake and the river. That was all the reasons why Kern Valley is such a great place.

I’ve been checking the red barrels and it appears that we sometimes forget that people are hungry after Christmas. Please remember your neighbors who are struggling. They count on you and they count on us.

Americans should be number one
Have we as Americans forgotten about New Orleans or any of the gulf coast? Four years after Katrina New Orleans is only a little over one half rebuilt, let along the rest of the coast line. This comes from the majors office of New Orleans, whom I called this morning. I didn’t see any concerts for the city nor any countries sending firemen, medical airplanes,nor hospital ships to New Orleans. Yes what happened in Haiti is awful. But as Americans, Americans should be number one. Donate money to rebuild America, then worry about others. God Bless America.

Also, the event was intended to be a recognition and celebration of cultural diversity here in the Valley and not intended just to be a recognition of Dr. King, Jr.

But eventually my anger would cool, time would pass and being a natural procrastinator, I would never follow through.
More of this storyChristmas morning I awoke to find Scarlet, our 11-year-old AQHA that was due to foal in late February dead in her corral. She had been killed by two loose blue pit bulls. There was so much blood I thought it was a mountain lion attack at first. But upon closer inspection there was dog prints all in her corral and her wounds were low, not on her back and neck. This is a horrible tragedy that could of been avoided. Scarlet was not a miniature horse but a full grown healthy 1,100-pound horse. Killed by dogs! Pit Bulls!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
Jan. 18 is Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and has been declared a “day of service” for the nation (www.mlkday.gov). As indicated on the website, Dr. King devoted his life to causes of equality and social justice – “He taught that through nonviolence and service to one another, problems such as hunger and homelessness, prejudice and discrimination can be overcome.” These problems still exist in our Valley – how can we join together to resolve these challenges? Materials for schools and organizations to use in remembrance and service are available at the website. I hope all share Dr. King’s dream “that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’” As Dr. King indicated, “When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir” – the promise that all citizens of this nation would be guaranteed the “unalienable Rights” of “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Let’s appreciate and embrace the cultural diversity in our Valley and celebrate this day, working together to fulfill Dr. King’s dream here in our Valley.

More of this storyAfter disasters, such as the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti, scam operations take advantage of people trying to help. A safe way to help is to take advantage of a trusted organization, such as Rotary International. It is a volunteer organization of business and professional leaders who provide humanitarian service, and help to build goodwill and peace in the world with more than 1.2 million members. Immediately after the earthquake in Haiti, Rotary started mobilizing to help Haiti and its 15 Rotary Clubs.
More of this storyI received a renewal notice for my fictitious business name. At first glance it appeared to be from the government and had a California Business and Professionals Code and even a bar code at the bottom. Looked very official. The renewal form had all my business information already pre-filled in and for corrections if needed. My file date wasn’t until July but they were asking me to file by 2-1-10. I thought this a little strange, they have never in the past sent a renewal and so long as you file before it expires there has never been a problem. I was not surprised that fees had more than tripled, since our State/County is in such financial ruin at this moment, I figured they were trying to get extra money from businesses on any renewal of any kind and they were more than happy to remind you it was coming up and you owed it. It even said “Renew Your Fictitious Name with the Kern County Recorder Now”. However in reading the small fine print this letter was not sent from a government agency, but from a service company by the name of Fictitious Business Name Renewal Center. They were kind enough to mention in the small print that this service has not been approved or endorsed by any government agency. The fee for this service is not required to be paid by or to any government agency. They also mention it was not a bill, but a solicitation. Don’t ask me what a solicitation is, for it is not in any of my dictionaries. My guess is they meant solicitation. My warning to all of you is Stop, read the small print And listen to that little voice that tells you something isn’t right. I did and it saved us a lot of money and future headaches.

Probably for the same reason elected officials are permitted to violate the trust placed in them by the voters. It is time to put the tea in the harbor and let the voters regain control.
More of this storyWe spent four lovely days at Christmas back in Kernville with family, and thoroughly enjoyed the lights and decorations. Especially Circle Park, which seemed to emulate the community spirit we enjoyed while living there for 27 years.
