Kern Valley positioned for HDL title run

Kern Valley took on the Bishop Broncos on Jan 28. It was their last home match and Senior Night.

The seniors, Matt Henderson, Eli Kamisher, Nick Medlin, Ed Rich, Sundy Scott, Kyel Smith and John Stevens were honored as well as their parents before the action.

Kern Valley started off slow as the match began at 130 pounds. Devin Marks was pinned by his Bishop opponent to put Kern Valley in a 6-0 deficit. Nick Medlin at 135 pounds and 140 Kyel Smith Kern Valley won by forfeit. With the 12 free points, the Broncs were up 12-6.

At 145 pounds Matt Henderson lost by pin in the third period to Bishop’s top wrestler. With the win, the Broncos tied the team score at 12-12. Ben Foster followed and was pinned late as well to give Bishop the 18-12 lead.

Kern Valley was able to gain some team points back as they took a series of forfeits to open the team score lead. Kurt Evans 160 pounds, Eli Kamisher 171 pounds, Ed Rich 189 pounds, Robert Ochoa 215 pounds, and HWT Sundy Scott each recorded a forfeit win to make the score 42-18 in favor of Kern Valley.

The wrestling picked back up at 103 pounds where John Smith of Kern Valley was able to pin his opponent, neither team had a 112 pound wrestler. Next at 119 pounds, Weston Williams was able to get the pin in his match and at 125 pounds Jordan Lacher finished things off with a pin for the final team score 60-18.

Head coach Wes Woody said, “It was a good team win for us, our freshman came through and got pins. We need to improve this week as we get set to take on Desert High School who has a team similar to ours. The winner of this dual will be the team that is crowned the High Desert League champion.”
