Kern Valley was able to show why they were the High Desert League champs during the regular season as they traveled to Bishop for the HDL Finals on Feb. 11.

The Broncs earned seven, first place finishes, five second place and capped it with one third place finish.

Ed Rich of the Broncs took home the HDL upper weight MVP plaque as the most outstanding wrestler of the upper weight (145lb-285lb).

John Smith was able to beat his Bishop opponent by points to take the title at 103 pounds. Jordan Lacher at 125 was able to beat his opponents to take home first. At 130 pounds, John Stevens won by pin to take first.

Kurt Evans won his opening match and in the most exciting match of the night was able to pull out a win as time expired to get the title at 160 pounds. Eli Kamisher at 171 pounds won by points to take home another title for the Broncs. Ed Rich won his match in 55 seconds to take home his third league title and was on his way to being named the upper weight MVP. Sundy Scott took first place.

Weston Williams was the No. 1 seed going in but lost by two points. He had a pinning combination but time had run out before the points were awarded. He would finish in second place. Camron Lanterman at 135 pounds fought hard but was pinned and took home second.

Kyel Smith (140) won his first match but came up short and was a second place finisher. Ben Foster at 152 was able to win his first match but fell just short of the title and had to settle for second place, while Robert Ochoa took second.

Rounding out the field for Kern Valley was Matt Henderson who lost his first match, but battled back to grab the third place finish.

The Broncs brought 13 wrestlers to Bishop and 12 of them will be going on to the CIF tournament this Friday and Saturday in Temecula.

On Feb. 13, Kern Valley traveled to the Team CIF tournament. This was the first time Kern Valley has ever gone to this event. We lost our opening round dual to Kaiser of Fontana.

Woody said, “It was a new experience for the team and one we hope becomes more familiar.”
