Sheriff's Activities League awards highlight youth,volunteers

On Tuesday, Feb. 23 the Kern County Sheriff’s Activities League held their Annual Sheriff’s Activities League Awards and Recognition Dinner in Bakersfield at the Veterans Hall. All Kern County SAL Chapters, East Bakersfield, Lamont, Wasco and Kern Valley were in attendance to recognize their 2009 Outstanding Boy, Girl, Volunteer and Sponsor of the year.

The evening opened with Sheriff Donny Youngblood welcoming everyone who attended the event, followed by the presentation of the Colors by the Kern Valley SAL Color Guard and National Anthem sung by Kern Valley SAL member, Jennifer Yule. The evening continued with a barbecue dinner provided by the Kern County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team.

“I was amazed to look around and see so many people from Kern Valley at the dinner. By far, we (Kern Valley SAL) had the biggest group of volunteers, supporters community leaders, which also included, Supervisor McQuiston, Congressman Kevin McCarthy’s representative, Benjamin McFarland, as well as families of our award recipients,” said Kern Valley SAL coordinator Deputy Joe Garcia.

“I was proud to see how sharp our Kern Valley SAL kids looked that evening. From our Color Guard presentation with Jennifer Yule singing the National Anthem, to our Award winner recipients and our beautiful Kern Valley SAL display,” added Garcia.

Kern Valley SAL Awarded Lisa Stephens, owner of Kern River Motors, as Sponsor of the Year, Bill and Sandra Adkins as Volunteer of the Year, Nicole Sutton as Outstanding Girl of the Year and Ronnie Lail as Outstanding Boy of the Year.

“I would like to thank the Kern Valley Community for their continued support of our kids, and we look forward to another productive and life changing year in 2010.” said Garcia
