In response to the volume of letters and emails received regarding the proposed cell tower in Kernville, Supervisor Jon McQuiston called for a community meeting March 24.

The meeting is set for 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, in the Community Room at the Kernville Chamber of Commerce. The Kernville Chamber is located at 11447 Kernville Road in Kernville.

Representatives from Verizon and the Kern County Planning Department will be present to answer questions and address concerns about the proposed project. “This is a great opportunity for residents to speak directly with Verizon representatives and let your concerns be known,” McQuiston said. “I encourage the citizens in the area to attend this meeting.”

The project, opposed by a vocal group of Kernville residents and business owners, was to be heard by the Planning Commission at a March 11 hearing.

“My business stands to suffer and my property value will decline if this tower is placed at the proposed location,” said Jon-Paul Fortunati of Northridge.

The matter is continued until Thursday, April 8. The Planning Commission meets at 7:00 P.M. in the Kern County Board of Supervisors Chambers located at 1115 Truxtun Avenue in Bakersfield.

" I would like to say, Maybe some people shold go to the county and complain about the people that are running a construction Business out of their home in that area, It's obvious that the construction owner that lives in that area, sure doesn't want to pay for space and clutter the area with their equipment and trailors, That makes property value decline faster than a cell tower "

" Verizon's Project Operational Statement is full of holes. Any decision that the Planning Commission makes that is based on that document would be a sham.

One thing that we may agree on is that KC is heading to court one way or the other and there are attorneys out there ready to laugh all the way to the bank.

Solution: put the tower somewhere else. "

" Oh MY GOD! People- A cell tower is needed in this valley. If you people lived up here during the pioneer days, there would be NO buildings,NO electricity, NO Phonelines, NO trails or streets. Probably NO people. Industry does not leave people poor. Stagnation & Ignorance leaves you poor. And Hello? EMF and radiation- cellphones, computers, microwaves, electrical lines, video games..These are in your home, next to your body, and closer than any tower will ever be to you. These towers are camoflauged. This will increase your property value. City-folk will be buying your land soon! "

" The permit for Verizon was not granted in 2007; it has not yet been approved. The 2007 permit was for a homesite on an adjacent property. "

" But, what if the population do not want it in that location, which they all said at that meeting. And was it not discovered the planning department had already given the permit sometime since 2007, and the property owners surrounding had not been notified? "

" The discussion on lawsuits is ... the planning department has NO GROUNDS to withhold the CUP. They've done it for others, the CANNOT discriminate. There are NO environmental impacts.

If they DON'T issue the CUP, both Verizon and the landowner can sue and WIN at Kern Planning.

This is really pretty simple. "

" To the person who wrote to KNOWLEDGE---I guess you should ask the "powers that be" what happened at that meeting, I am not going to tell you what happened, that way you can ask and find out for yourself. I do know, so you can ask someone and find out what happened, and then you will understand my writing. "

" Sounds like the meeting the other day found solutions to the problem, would you people have the property owner able to sue the planning department for Kern County, for giving the permit already? Com'on --act like grown-ups already! "

" Verizon is not claiming that the proposed tower will give internet access. It has nothing to do with internet.

The valley should be begging Google for their new fiber optic internet. "

" The cell tower is only for Verizon -- not for other cell phone companies. Verizon service works fine. Also, they don't have to put it in a residential neighborhood. Put it on FS land! "

" Hey, "what does this mean," aka 'genius',

He owns rental cottages near the tower. His opinion is valid. People don't come up to Kernville to be radiated by EMR and RF radiation -- that's why they leave L.A.

Nobody wants to spend good money to rent a vacation cottage under a tower. "

How does a cell tower in Kernville impact a guy in LOS ANGELES?????

Maybe that's our problem - too many people from LA are trying to screw us up and make it hard to get the same cell and internet services they've had for 10 years! I'm POed "

" My family has owned property in the valley since before the lake. Having stable power, clear telephone and TV signal has always been a problem. TV has gotten worse, power is a little better, and cellular telephone is a lot better than the old landlines. Internet access is tne new utility and it stinks in the valley, unless you live close to the Verizon building and get DSL. I want my property to have increased value by having 3G and then 4G data. You can keep your AT&T. "

" Too many people move up here from the city and then agitate to make our beautiful valley into the kind of screwed up place they just left. Why don't they do us all a favor and just go home? My ATT phone just works just fine everywhere in the valley, without any 70 foot tall plastic "monopines." The project is not appropriate for our community, it's not necessary, it violates our zoning laws, and the neighbors don't want it in their neighborhood. By the way, the Luddites were heroes. Industrialization created poverty, wage slavery, environmental destruction and global warming. "

    S.A. Spoonemore wrote on Mar 17, 2010 8:51 AM:

" First you have to explain what a Luddite is so the unread/uninformed will understand you. The Luddites were a social movement of British textile artisans in the 19th century who protested—often by destroying machinery—against the changes produced by the Industrial Revolution, which they felt were leaving them without work and changing their entire way of life.

It seems we all want progress, but not if it interfers with our personal agenda. This is typical thinking here in our beautiful valley. "

" You can throw someone's name into your email but you don't have the cajones to sign your own name. Big man!

We have building codes for a reason. The proposed tower violates the building code and that's why they need a variance.

Look what happens to places that have few or no building codes.

By the way, if the tower is approved the approval will be appealed. Now that will be fun. "

Luddites wrote on Mar 17, 2010 12:35 AM:

" Sometimes I'm ready to give up and let the Luddites of the Valley win. You deserve to have NO WATER, NO POWER, NO CELL PHONES, NO LANDLINES, NO GASOLINE and NO TOURISTS. And can someone tell mne what a paintball gun seller like Jon-Paul Fortunati thinks is the HARM to him from this? That seems like nonsense. I've had it. Go dark all you Luddites. If the tower doesn't go in, I'll bring a suit against the county. "
