Retired Kern County Firefighter David Derr wasted no time asking board members and hospital administrators the question on everyone’s mind at the April 6 Kern Valley Healthcare District meeting.

Derr, a resident of Kernville, asked KVHD representatives where they stood on the recently passed health care bill and what impact they believed it would ultimately have on the district.

CFO Chet Beedle, spoke with some reservation about the bill, “I can’t give you specifics as far as total dollars, but I don’t think there is any question that I concur wholeheartedly with the fact that any additional coverage for the uninsured is a positive for this facility.

“With Medicare regulations and with health care reform, which are government regulations related, it’s not just necessarily (about) interpretation, it’s (about) implementation,” Beedle said. “But overall, for this facility, without question it is a positive. Overall for the average person in this community, it is a positive.”

CEO Tim McGlew announced that Edith Cecil has been promoted to Director of Nursing for the Skilled Nursing Facility adding, “She has done a remarkable job so far working with the staff.” McGlew also spoke about the creation of a Family Council for family members of residents of the SNF.

“Word has spread and interest is growing., he said. The council will allow family members to sit down with hospital administration in an informal setting to discuss various issues.”

In his financial report Beedle stated, “We have some positive trends and some that are continuing not so positive.”

However, he added, “Third party payers are for the most part paying more slowly than they have in the past. The drop in our collections for insurance and managed care is tremendous here. A lot more people have dropped from the ranks of insured to uninsured.”

Commenting after the meeting, Derr stated, “I think my question may have been a little premature considering how recently this bill was passed.”

He added, “The board clearly demonstrated that they were all open-minded to whatever the law is going to do.”

" You are very transparent. Your husband works in the insurance industry and he is under attack. You quote figures from the 1970’s and are afraid to get current and correct data. You’re living in a fantasy world and the sad fact is everyone can see it. If that’s what make you happy stay there. I feel sorry for you and so must your friends. It’s hard sometime to face reality. And no I don’t have AIDS or Cancer (but I do feel for those folks) Good luck in your little world. "

" I'm sure you are paying that, you don't have to prove it to us. Preexisting is one of the reforms to bring down costs. So many of us have prexisting problems we can't get insured. Try that out. It took me years to get insurance after the cancer. It has to stop, we can't pay those costs. If I heard correctly we the damaged who pay inflated rates or don't get insured need reform to take place. It's a sad situation watching all your money out the door or bankrupting, I know someone who did that. We believe you. "

" why is it so difficult to understand healthcare reform? I insure my car, my house, my life, my roof, my yard, and if I don't I can't drive, I can't purchase a house without insurance, and fire insurance would be included in a loan possibly. why is it so difficult to understand that we are already insured for everything from our Satellite boxes to our water lines up to our houses. And healthcare sounds different? You pay insurance for TV's. Get a grip, it's part of the package, the insurance package. More people the less it costs. "

" Red, I have forgotten more about insurance than you could ever know or want to, so don't have a need to call anyone, my husband is in insurance business...give it up and just admit you have a pre-existing condition that is "that disease" -- the one that can't be cured, and is a very nasty one. That is the reason for the Insurance fiasco today, too many people who want to have their own way and not live an orderly and correct way....I pity you and will hope you find peace in your misery. "

I will ask you one last time..if you don't like our data get on the phone, call a large insurance company and get a quote for someone over 55 with a pre existing condition. Then report back to us
    Thanks

" Ok, Red, if you say your mothers boyfriend pays $900 a month for healthcare insurance, then I say he sure would gain if he just put the money in the bank and forgot insurance. That seems to me the best plan for him.....are you sure he doesn't have that "uninsurable disease" the government is pushing to have treated in Obamacare? You know, the one that is incurable? "

" You are NOT required to insurance YOURSELF or YOUR CAR. You are required to insure the DRIVER and CAR that you might hit, and the passengers IN YOUR CAR. This is WILDLY different than what Obama has done to us with health care. What's next? Depends panties if you are over 65? That's a good Obama nanny-state move. "

" Is this the stupid comments section, I guess so. small business pays more because they have less in the way of employees. But what if my neighbors, my employees, my cousins, my veteranarian, all got together, would it cost less? Of course. That's how insurance works by numbers. Car insurance is mandatory in most states and the costs dropped, not satisfactorily, but substantially. You can only compare the two because it's called the insurance pool. The more the merrier, because pooling us all together, using larger groups, cost less, and now the insurers decide who they want. Done. "

" Realistic! Government run 'anything' does not work. For God sakes, the government doesn't work anymore. Let's also look at the fact that most preexsisting conditions can be avoided and managed by better eating habits and exercise. Although medications do serve to help many, let's look at the amt of legal drug addicts we have in the country. Not all pain needs to be taken care of with pills. But America has been conditioned to belive that. Illegal imigrants have free medical in this country. I work with an organization that provides med. care to many of them.we don't need Obama. "

" My mom's boyfriend pays almost $900 a month for insurance and its not even as great as you described. He still has a deductable and co-pay. Granted he is over 50 and self employeed. The point I am trying to make is it can be very expensive if your older and have preexisting conditions. The reality is Insurance is a for-profit business and so insurance companies have found ways to maximize their profits. I don't know if Red's description is or isn't realistic but I know it can be pretty high. "

" Oh my God, Red, do you really think that any informed citizen thinks your statements are true; including you paying $18K per year for your health insurance today? In the 1970's a health insurance policy which had max use of about $300,ooo.oo to $500,000.00 of lifetime benefit only cost around $300 to $500 per month, I know because I had the best, "Prudential Health Insurance" and it was expensive but there were no co-pays, nor "no caps" on anything! Who on God's Green Earth do you think you are kidding? "

Please explain your comments with actual facts. Thanks "

" So called "healthcare reform" is not going to help this hospital. This hospital is not properly run as it is. Obama or not, this country already has free healthcare, it's just not being made available to the working class or citizens. Think about all the other government- run programs. Have Cancer?-Do you really want Government employees(Dr.s,Nurses, oncologists) in charge of your health? We are being micromanaged by BIG Gov. It needs to stop before it's too late. KVHD needs to stop thinking of the paycheck and think of the pt.s in healthcare reform. Stop questionable med practices, you'll probably get paid. "
