PKRV to meet May 27 at South Fork Elementary

The next meeting of Preserve the Kern River Valley (PKRV) will be held at the South Fork Elementary School, in the cafeteria, on Thursday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. Discussion will include fundraising ideas, our meeting with Ben McFarland and Bryan Williams last week, the Renewable Resources meetings last week, among other things.

KRV Fire Safe Council meets to discuss fire prevention

The Kern River Valley Fire Safe Council held its quarterly meeting on Thursday morning. The council has been focusing on major fire-related issues, and is working to get grants. Right, David Brinsfield, of the Bureau of Land Management, gives the council an update on BLM’s recent fire activity, educational endeavors, community assistance, as well as an update on their ‘Land Use Plan.’ Representatives from the U.S. Forest Service, BLM, Kern County Fire Department, and the KRV Fire Safe Council attended the meeting, which was located at County Complex Building.

Forest Service seeks public comment on boat launch facilities grant proposal

KERNVILLE, CA … The Forest Service is asking for public comments on a proposal to improve and modernize boat launching facilities, including new information signage at several recreation areas located at Lake Isabella. According to District Ranger Rick Larson, the agency is applying for a boat launch facilities grant through California Department of Boating and Waterways (Cal Boating) Local Assistance Grant Program to fund these improvements.  The application is for state fiscal year funding 2011-2012.

Silver City Ghost Town Marks Anniversaries

Twenty years ago this summer the J. Paul Corlew family purchased the historic Silver City Ghost Town in Bodfish from Dave and Arvilla Mills family. The Mills family purchased the site from “Wormie” Annie Sullivan and moved in most of the historic buildings in the late 1960’s. Mills trucked in over 20 buildings to the site from throughout the Kern River Valley’s mining camps and early settlements. Many of the buildings were saved just days before being scheduled to be torn down.

Man arrested in Wofford Heights stabbing

Kern County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a report of a stabbing in the 6500 block of Wofford Blvd., in Wofford Heights, Friday night. At about 10:00 p.m., deputies arrived on scene and located Ronald Haiglar, 28, suffering from several stab wounds. Haiglar told deputies the stabbing occurred at the Chevron gas station located on Wofford Blvd.
