Beginning Aug. 1, the Waste Management Department will be charging $5.00 per ton, with a $5.00 minimum per load fee, for vehicles that come to any of its disposal sites with an untarped or unsecured load.

The goal of the Unsecured/Untarped Load Fee is to achieve 100 percent compliance, which means that all vehicles transporting waste to county disposal sites are properly tarped and secured.

County ordinance and state law requires that trash loads be secured and tarped or fines of up to $1,000 can be imposed on violators. Canvases and plastic tarps, rope and bungee cords are simple tools residents can use to completely cover and or secure their trash during transport.

“With the budget cuts we are implementing, we do not have the manpower to clean up the fly-away litter and bulky items found along our roadsides,” said Doug Landon, Director of the Kern County Waste Management Department.

" When the land use fees on our propery tax bills were voted in they were advertised as an alternative to gate fees. newsflash- a fee charged at the gate is a gate fee. Call it a tarp fee if you want. Where will this fee go? I now pay over $350 a year in land use fees. I just paid $361 fine for speeding in Weldon. Enforce litter laws like speed laws, collect $1000 from actual offenders. My alternative- use a tarp, Ridgecrest dump and shop at Home Depot and Walmart- with KC fees I can't afford to shop local. "

" I agree with those of you that are in favor of the "tarp your trash fee" but I do not agree with the locals who think their neighbors are not guilty of littering! I live on Burlando St. in Kernville and it's not uncommon for me to hear or see some local loser heading home from the bar at 1:00 or 2:00 am. throw a beer bottle out the window on their way home at night. happens all the time! " I think that someone should send this article to the Medical Waste people in Tehachapi. A few years back i saw numerous plastic tubs with a label on them that read Tehachapi Medical Waste.
These small bins with interlocking lids were along the Caliente-Bodfish Road between Hwy 58 through to the Havilah Suroundings. Lets charge them BIG BUCKS!

" I think that this fee is long overdue. Not that we do anything wrong, look at our surrounding mountains. The answer is simple. Tarp your trash, as you should, of course, and surprise! No fee. "

" Tarp fee? What tarp fee? We don't need no stinking tarp fee! On the other hand maybe it's a good idea, a fine idea, one whose time has come. Tarp me baby and give me the five bucks. "

" Huh..that's funny because I see a lot of out of towners throwing their trash via the road side. The tourist are to blame for quite a bit of this road side trash. Yes..I have seen many taking their loads to the dump and garbage falling out, but it's mostly tree leaves and yard trimmings. "
