Coordination waste of effort
I wish it wasn’t necessary to concern myself with this divisive issue of “coordination” and the “citizen’s advisory committee” sold by Mr. Chris Horgan to our cemetery board. I would much rather spend my attention on issues such as our hospital’s financial woes, our schools problems, or the good business of KRVR.

No respect shown for grieving family
I recently attended an interment service at Kern River Valley Cemetery in Wofford Heights and I was shocked and disgusted at the way the deceased’s family and mourners were treated.

Young entrepreneur deserves support
This letter is not meant to contradict the laws of this state, rather to shed a glimpse of light on the local law authority why a certain young man has been witnessed driving a golf cart along public roads. This young man is 14 and one of the hardest workers I have ever seen in my 56 years on this planet.

Sacrifice is the name of the game
There have been some back and forth comments regarding our girls softball win in CIF. While many comments posted have merit, some do not. I leave that to the reader to decide. I wish to say that it is an expensive proposition to fund a girl that wants to play travelball. They do not do it in order to please the high school coach. They do this because they love softball. It is an expensive hobby. Fees, fuel food,hotels, etc. helmets, cleats, uniforms. Injuries. Some are career ending. Three and four hundred dollar bats. You can’t spend any time with your friends because they don’t play ball. You and your family are always at the ballfield.

Alternatives to county budget cuts
I just read that the libraries were the latest victims of the County Supervisors. Don't they have the brass to live within their means. There are so many wasted funds that could be cut. Why don't they cut something more costly and wasteful.
More of this storyAbout three weeks ago I was having problems breathing, collapsing, and a temperature of 103.8 degrees. The Mediacom repair man was coming to fix my cable. I went out to bring my dogs in and collapsed. Not being able to get up, he jumped my fence and helped me in the house. Thank you goes to him. The next day I had the same problem but my fever was 104.5 degrees. I called our ER because breathing was worse. They said, I was fine and not an emergency. I saved money not going and a couple of weeks later was able to spend my money locally instead of on a hospital bill. Thank you K.V. hospital for the money I saved.

While PV (photo voltaic) panels may be clean while they are deployed on a roof, the mining, extracting, refining, manufacturing and recycling of materials used in PV panels is not so clean. The photo voltaic manufacturing industry is regarded to be just a little better than the electronics industry in general. Providing the commodities used to construct thin film pv panels is considerably dirtier than the electronics industry.
More of this storyIf anyone in the Kern River Valley who, like me, has a P.O. Box mailing address and therefore did not receive a Census form, you can be counted. All you have to do is call toll-free 1-866-872-6868 and give them the information over the phone. Someone will ask simple questions, and the whole thing takes less than 10 minutes. Also, if a Census Taker does happen to come to your home (they told me over the phone that the deadline is July 10) you can answer the questions for them, but you will only be counted once. It’s pretty easy.

ER treats patients with utmost care
My husband Bob Drake suffered a heart attack on July 4th. The fire department and paramedics were quick to respond and took him to our local hospital. There he was stabilized and then transported to Bakersfield Heart Hospital. The ER doctor there said Dr. Elliott at our hospital had done a fine job stabilizing him. My husband has been through our ER department many times the past few years. We have always been treated with respect and very fortunate to have such a facility. This time I felt compelled to write this letter. A huge thank you for the hospital staff.

Re: Feed military, starve Americans, 7-7-10 LettersI support the men and women of our military one hundred percent. I cannot imagine anyone living in this great country and enjoying all the benefits it provides and not supporting them. It’s because of our military people who have fought and died over the years that we have the freedoms we all enjoy.

Misinformation campaign misguided
Re: Clean renewable energy?, Letters, 7/14/10There are apparently people in the Kern River Valley who would hope, single-handedly, to create a public misinformation campaign about the proposed Weldon solar project. I believe Mr. Lowe (the author of the letter to which Friend refers) is one of these persons.

RRG, please reconsider solar ranch location
Your advertisements in our local paper, the Kern Valley Sun, promoting the Weldon Solar Ranch might have sounded like a good thing for someone living in Los Angeles or San Jose, but for the people in the Kern River Valley the ad was deceptive and didn’t begin to tell the true story.

More of this storyIf you’ve lived around the Valley for any length of time you’ve seen the water-dropping helicopters flying overhead. I have never thought about what was involved in their job. We always thank the line firefighters as we should, I can’t think of a harder and more dangerous job than that of the firefighter.

King Midas or Frankenstein in the Gulf?
Most of my 79 years, geologists have been predicting an earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico. What if all the Gulf oil wells failed, by earthquake, at the same time? Geologic time cannot be precisely predicted. It could be one year, one hundred years, one thousand years, or it could be tomorrow. The waters of the earth are all connected. They are constantly in flux and convex motion, like an accordion. What you drop in the ocean doesn’t stay there. It travels, slowly, but constantly. It could show up on any beach, given enough time. This fact has not been factored into the risk assessments for the Gulf by the oil industry.

Feed military, starve Americans
We need to have a military for sure, but funding should be appropriate to the level of importance to the average American citizen. Today we see a disproportionate amount of funding shunted off to the military while many Americans go hungry and jobless and homeless. Money spent on the military creates jobs at a much slower rate than money invested in education, clean energy, and health care.

The town of Keyesville underwent a bit of "gentling," with the arrival of several families. This changed the atmosphere of the rowdy mining camp for the better. According to one reporter, ". . . as the women and children arrived, the loafers left and the rum shops went out of business." Naturally, a saloon or two survived, but there were definitely some changes.
