Good times were to be had at Kissack Field on Saturday, as the Kern Valley Adult Co-Ed Softball League held their annual league barbecue and All Star Game.
With the barbecue blazing and local band Inviticus jamming, softball league players and community members came out to support the league, which is attempting to raise funds to help with league entry fees and field improvements. Food and beverages were available for a donation.
The event began with a Home Run Derby, for a moderate donation contestants were given ten “outs” to see how many balls they could drive out of Kissack field. Kristi Tate and Cody Farnum were the winners of round one of the derby with Tate hitting five home runs and Farnum drilling three. Each received a Demarini baseball/softball bag. Round two winners were MaryBeth Sprouse with one home run and Dan Link with two homers. Each received a $20 gift card from Wofford Heights Chevron.
Following the derby, representatives of each team in the league played in the All Star Game. See page C1 of the Sports section for complete coverage.
The event would not have been possible were not for the support from the community. “The community support is great,” said league president Debbie Loseth, “We couldn't have this league without our local businesses, who sponsor our teams and always donate items whenever we ask.” Various local businesses donated items to the league for a raffle held during the All Star Game.
Loseth has been involved in running the league for over seven years, and the league continues to grow. “I do it as a volunteer for the community,” said Loseth, “The league players show their appreciation with their smiles and laughter. We all love our ballfield.”
“My husband, Mark Loseth, is so knowledgeable about softball, I couldn't run this league without his input,” added Loseth, “None of this would happen without him.”
The KV Adult Co-Ed Softball League is the only of its kind in the Kern Valley. The league features five teams; the Mixed Nuts, Hyside, the Blasters, CARE, and the Vipers, each playing a 24-game schedule. |
