Ponderosa Project helps protect community

The Ponderosa Project is underway around the community of Ponderosa, located on the Western Divide Ranger District, Giant Sequoia National Monument. The Forest Service is working to reduce fuels using activities such as the thinning of small trees and brush, piling, and prescribed burning.

DAR Constitution Week BBQ Sept. 12

Tickets are now available for the annual Constitution Week barbecue offered each year by Kawaiisu Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. This year's event will be Sunday, Sept. 12 at 4:00 p.m. at the Squirrel Valley ranch home of Steve and MaryEllen Spradlin. KV Bike Park Grand Opening race Aug. 21

The community-built KV Bike Park will celebrate its Grand Opening and hold a double-point race at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21. Race sign ups are 4:00-5:00 p.m. Mountain bike skills course, pump track, dirt jumps, mountain bike trials course and California's newest NBL-sanctioned BMX track. Racers must be a member of the National Bike League (www.nbl.org). BBQ at 6:00 p.m. Please bring items to share. The KV Bike Park is located adjacent to the John E. Giant Sequoia National Monument Plan available for 90-day comment period

PORTERVILLE, CA –The Giant Sequoia National Monument Draft Environmental Impact Statement (Draft EIS), and Giant Sequoia National Monument Draft Management Plan (Draft Management Plan), are available for public comment.  The Draft EIS describes six alternatives: (A through F), one would manage the Giant Sequoia National Monument. "We encourage the public to provide their input," said Regional Forester Randy Moore.  "The Giant Sequoia National Monument has 33 of California's 75 Giant Sequoia Groves."

    The Kern Valley Hospital Foundation held its installation of officers and appreciation dinner in the hospital cafeteria on July 26. The dinner recognized board members, directors-at-large and the foundation's many volunteers for all of their hard work and dedication to the district.

    The Kern Valley Healthcare District, partnered with the KUSD Family Resource Center, will host the 10th annual Seniors Summer Health and Information Faire on Monday, Sept.13 at the Senior Center in Lake Isabella.
